Missed foul on Lebron James just the latest of David Stern's problems
Officiating in the NBA has gotten so poor, when players intentionally foul the refs aren't even picking up on it. Yet another black eye.

(Spurs fans, this isn't about your team ... don't worry. Nothing to see here)

The missed foul call on Lebron James does not have an overall effect on the series. Even if Lebron makes all three free-throws, the Spurs are still winning the series. That's not solely what's agitating. This is just the latest of many blunders, and representative of an overall inconsistent NBA we watch today. Fans of the game deserve to watch the sport as defined by the rules and at the highest level of competition that shouldn't be too much to ask.

I'm disgusted. Not because the Spurs are going to win another title (that doesn't help), but because I desperately want to love the NBA. It could and should be on par with the NFL.

(Sidenote here real quick - In postgame interviews, Lebron James didn't speak a word about the officiating. Even the entire Spurs team admitted to trying to foul. James nothing. Mature move. James gets it. He'll have his time.)

I thought we were headed in the right direction this past offseason when David Stern spoke convincingly of cutting down on player complaining and carrying the basketball. His words were put into action for all of 7 days. For all the fine work Mr. Stern has done to reach the label as "Best Commish in Sports," he'd better seriously address these issues with more results next season.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but judging by ratings that's doubtful. The NBA is nearly unwatched right now and the officials have to take a significant responsibility for the blame. Basketball is the most difficult sport to officiating, but that doesn't mean we can't get a sports the resembles the rules.

Major props on this man. I'm 21 and the NBA has changed so much in my lifetime. Basketball is my first love and I hate to see how the NBA has become basically a soft game. I miss the days of the hard foul and the guy who got fouled knew it was coming so he didn't act like a punk, he just got up and hit is free throws. He knew he was going to get knocked down because that was part of the game. Now if you so much foul a guy a little too hard you can get tossed from a game or the league can go back, look at the tape and suspend you after the fact. The players now don't have the same respect for the game that the guys of the early to mid 90's had (I don't mean every player but definitely the majority). Until the NBA can go back to that style of play and there becomes a little more balance in the East and West, the NBA will continue to suffer and us as fans of basketball will continue to suffer.

All of this is what I've been saying all along. My biggest problem with the Suns series was the inconsistent officiating throughout. In all of the games, there plenty of calls that made you scratch your head. In no sport do the referees have such an impact on the game. We don't sit there after a football game going, "Man, that Ed Hochuli sure was inconsistent today!" More and more fans are realizing this, and if the NBA doesn't do something to get consistency, they will stay away. Either have rules or don't, but don't say you are going to enforce a rule at the beginning of the year and back off by the end of the year, and don't stop enforcing rules just because it is the playoffs.

James was fouled.  Sometimes it's hard to catch some calls with the naked eye, but that one was pretty obvious.  I guess it wouldn't be as fun for a game to end on foul shots, but call it consistently.  I think the Suns/Spurs series was the Finals anyway, but I hoped the Cavs could put up a better showing.

As a cavs fan I hate to see that game end like that. Not the loss but the lack of the call. One it gives cavs fans something other than the teams lack ability, to knock down a shot, to gripe about. Sure lebron was fouled, on quite a few plays I might add (and that goes for both teams), but that didn't cost us the series. It only cost the NBA future dollars.

Warning to NBA fans.

Before the NHL lockout, every year they would announce that they wanted to crack down on all the obstruction calls (think neutral zone trap), it would start out that way at the beginning of the season, fans would be happy (more offense), then the officials would slowly go back to the same old way of fixing things. Even after the lockout when they finally made major changes to the rules to increase scoring, officials slowly revert how they call things by the time the playoffs roll around. It's not something that exactly wins over NHL fans (although they have many other problems too).

But the NBA will slowly lose more fans over this.

You know something I've noticed....the MLB, NBA, and NHL have all had the ratings of their final series go down the last few years...

The game has definitely changed from all aspects.  I think that all of us will say that was a foul, but would it have helped the Cavs?  With such poor shooting under pressure and a big air ball free throw James miss in game 2, I don't think it would have mattered.  The Cavs" Fighting spirit" I think is gone.  If not, I ask anyone to tell me where will we find the needed points in the next game to win?  Who will step up?

IMO, the NBA seems to be the only sport where established teams and superstars consistently get more calls.  I compare it to the Braves during the 90's with Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz consistently getting calls off the plate from umpires.  Fans and players both were upset and rightfully so.  The Spurs have been here before, paid there dues so to speak, and they are getting the benefit of some no calls, most notably Ginobli fouling Gibson on a 3 point attempt and Bowen's foul on James at the end.  While it doesnt have a direct affect on the outcome of the series, it is a terrible precedent to set
