As someone who's competed in a few amateur beach volleyball tournaments over the years, I like to think I follow the AVP enough to know when records are being shattered. I guess not.
The team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh have long been atop of the Women's Beach Volleyball world, winning gold in the 2004 Olympics. But what I had missed was that the duo has won a staggering 17 straight tournaments and 96 straight matches. Both are records, obviously, and both were previously held by none other than themselves.
Although women's beach volleyball is nowhere near our regular sports consciousness, it's safe to label May-Treanor and Walsh as the most dominant female athletes in sports today. Not the Williams sisters, not Lorena Ochoa, and not Danica Patrick, but you knew that already.
I'd like to also note that above is three full paragraphs before mention of the couples other talents, follow by gratuitous volleyball focused pictures were posted. Aren't you proud of me? Thanks to World Isaac for a helpful collage.
A reminder that this is the team to watch at the Beijing Olympics...
