President's Day NHL Action All Day [NHL Live Thread]

2/18/13 in NHL   |   Jess   |   35135 respect

Greetings, puckheads, and happy President's Day! Hockey sneaked up on us this Monday morning, so there are a couple of games in progress but we will share with you the picks we made ahead of time anyway. Join Bryan (or as I like to call him, BK), Debi, and I for another full day of NHL action!

Games in Progress:
Game: Senators (7-6-2) @ Devils (9-3-3)
Broadcast: SNET-E, MSG
BK: The Devils had the regulation loss for this pay period and the Sens are just too banged up. I gotta put my bias aside and go with the home team.
Jess: I didn't get my pick in in time, but for the record I would have gone with the Devils. Brodeur is in net and I just can't pick against one of the greatest.

Game: Flyers (6-9-1) @ Islanders (6-7-1)
Broadcast: CNS-PH, MSG PLUS
BK: Both of these teams could use a win. I'm going with the Isles even though it's asking a lot of them to win 3 in a row against their own division.
Jess: I probably would have picked the Islanders. And been wrong.

Game: Predators (7-3-5) @ Avalanche (5-7-1)
Broadcast: NHLN-US, FS-TN, ALT
BK: I'm not sold on either team this year, but I have a little more faith in the road team. I take the Preds for my sis.
Debi: I dunno!! I can't pick! No stats to look at but I think both have been doing a little better?? Avs I guess.
Jess: My prediction - the Avalanche kick some butt early on and collapse in the dramatic fashion only the Avs seem to be able to muster this year.

Primetime Games:
Game: Hurricanes (8-4-1) @ Canadiens (9-4-1)
BK: The Canes have really come alive, but the Habs are playing equally as well. Decisions, decisions...ok, in honor of the Vegas Flop (yes, he's never living that down), I'm going with Les Habitants pour Marcus.
Debi: Got to take the Habs. Might get to see bits of this game on the French channel.
Jess: This will be an interesting game. I've gotta go with the home team here. Maybe even in overtime.

Game: Maple Leafs (9-6-0) @ Panthers (4-6-4)
Broadcast: SNET-O, FS-F
BK: The Panthers are just finding ways to lose right now. I gotta go with the Leafs, Florida is just too much out of sync and can't hold any sort of lead. They've also used up their goal supply for the month of February.
Debi: Ugh. I don't want to pick the Leafs but I think they probably will get the win here.
Jess: The Maple Leafs are just so much better than the Panthers, this seems like a blowout waiting to happen. However, there's usually a good upset per night and I'd rather pick this one than the other seemingly lopsided game tonight.

Game: Flames (5-5-3) @ Coyotes (7-6-2)
Broadcast: SNET-W, FS-A
BK: I know they're tired from having played in Dallas last night, but I'm still going with the Flames for ya, Debi.
Debi: Of course I'm taking the Flames! And thank you Bryan for hanging with me on this one! They seem to have figured something out so here's hoping it's just the start of better days to come.
Jess: I hope the Flames are on the upswing. I'm going to take a chance and pick them here.

Game: Blue Jackets (4-9-2) @ Ducks (11-2-1)
Broadcast: FS-O, PRIME
BK: I know the old cliche is any given day, but the Ducks aren't going to slip up. Home team wins.
Debi: Duh!! The Ducks are so hot right now they're smokin'. And wow but I can't believe some of the plays they've put together. Ducks gonna kick some AZZ tonight.
Jess: I really hope you guys are right. The first game after a long road swing always makes me a little nervous. I hope the Ducks can come home and play just as well in front of their home crowd as they've played on the road over the past week and a half, but it's going to be tough. Hiller's starting tonight, after Fasth has given me a sense of security when he's in net. Nothing against Jonas but between that and the fact that this is their first game back (and so quickly after the road trip) scares me.

Yesterday was a full day of hockey as well, so there were plenty of plays to choose from in order to make this Top 5 video, courtesy of

4 shutouts on the day, wow!  Sorry Debi.sad  Meanwhile it looks like the Ducks are doing what they usually do in the 3rd.

I'm only going to have 3 of 7 right or so it appears.

Ducks up 2-1 in Anaheim at the end of the 2nd. I hope they come out and play the 3rd like they have been.

Ducks GOALLLLS! (yes, I typed that right)

That was a quick change of momentum!  Yesterday and today seem to be the games with rapid-fire scoring, REALLY early goals, 2 in very short time, but it makes for exciting hockey!

In the immortal words of Mike Lange, "you'd have to be here to believe it!"

Wow, looks like I'm 0-fer today.  This stinks!  Can a brother at least get ONE team right tonight?

Just got home a while ago, and I'm really happy to see Ottawa got the win, even if it was in a shoot out.  I am a closet fan blush

Wow those two early games were just kind of blah. This Avs/Preds game is a little more interesting though!
