Monday Night Hockey Open Game Thread 4/1

Can the Avs upset the Wings in The Joe? [NHL Live Thread]

4/1/13 in NHL   |   Jess   |   34793 respect

Greetings, puckheads! I hope you all had a fantastic Easter weekend. My family and I spent time in Seattle, enjoying all that the exquisite Emerald City has to offer, and to top it off it was sunny and 70! Gorgeous. Friday night we attended a WHL playoff game between the Portland Winterhawks and the Everett Silvertips. While it was horribly officiated, it was still a lot of fun; the atmosphere of playoff hockey, young talent, one of the most impressive goalies I've seen at the junior level since Dan Blackburn (remember him?), and the first hockey game my daughter was old enough to fully appreciate. Her teeth were chattering with excitement through almost the entire game. At any level, if you've never been to a game, I highly recommend it.

Blog Photo - Monday Night Hockey Open Game Thread 4/1This evening gives us a nice full plate, staggered relatively nicely, and one of my co-hosts and I will share our insights on how we think this night will go. All times eastern, as usual.

7:00pm
Game: Islanders (16-16-3) @ Devils (15-11-9)
Broadcast: MSG PLUS 2, MSG PLUS
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - Just to play devil's advocate (all puns intended) I'm gonna take the Isles here...just because.

Jess - I'm going to disagree with you and go with the Devils here. I have no other reason stronger than your "just because".

7:00pm
Game: Jets (18-16-2) @ Rangers (16-15-3)
Broadcast: TSN-JETS, MSG
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - This one is tough. My gut tells me Winnipeg, but I think this might be the night the Rangers break out of their scoring slump. Rangers win.

Jess - Let's go Rangers!

7:30pm
Game: Hurricanes (16-15-2) @ Canadiens (22-7-5)
Broadcast: RDS, FS-CR
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - The Canes are playing pretty well lately, but I think the Habs are just too strong for them. Les Habitants vont gagner ce soir.

Jess - I like the Canadiens too.

7:30pm
Game: Avalanche (12-18-4) @ Red Wings (17-13-5)
Broadcast: TSN2, NBCSN, FS-D
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - I really want to pick the Avs for a nice little upset here, but I expect the Wings to come out with a chip on their shoulder tonight after yesterday's beat down by the Hawks in their own building. Wings should take this.

Jess - This is probably one of my favorite all-time rivalries in sports. I wouldn't sleep on the Avs in this game, simply because it's against the Red Wings. The Wings will come out swinging, no doubt, after suffering embarrassment at the hands of the Blackhawks yesterday, but I do think Colorado will give them all they can handle. Maybe more. I'll pick the Wings, but I'll be honest - I'm not entirely confident.

8:00pm
Game: Blues (17-14-2) @ Wild (21-11-2)
Broadcast: FS-MW, FS-N, FS-WI
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - This one is tough. Blues stingy defense, Wild playing very well on home ice...I'll go with the Wild.

Jess - Blues are better than their record, but the Wild are playing really well, especially at home. I can't pick against them here.

8:30pm
Game: Predators (14-14-7) @ Blackhawks (26-5-3)
Broadcast: FS-S, CSN-CH
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - What a sight yesterday at The Joe, I loved it! This one wont be quite as much of a laugher with Rinne in goal, but this is one I don't think the Preds can handle. Ultimately Chicago proves to be too much.

Jess -I think this will be a better game than it looks on paper. Preds have a good D even outside of Rinne and although I don't believe their offense is any match for Chicago, we should see a battle. Picking Chicago anyway, but it'll be fun.

8:30pm
Game: Ducks (23-7-5) @ Stars (16-15-3)
Broadcast: FS-W, FS-SW
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - Ducks, and that's all I have to say about that!

Jess - For the love of everything good and decent in the world, let this be an easy win for the Ducks. They need it. I need it. A big fat win over Dallas on the road would ease some of the pain they put me through over the last couple of weeks. The win over Chicago Friday was good but not quite enough to lift my NHL spirits. I dig that Boudreau's optimistic and happy with their play when they improve inside a game but just once I want to hear him get frustrated with this team when they slack. Can't these guys play a full 60 minutes? They're killing me. Stop waiting until the third period to make a damn push.

9:30pm
Game: Flames (13-16-4) @ Oilers (14-13-7)
Broadcast: SNET-W
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - I'm gonna take the Flames on the road as Edmonton is very inconsistent.

Jess - Go Flames!

10:30pm
Game: Canucks (19-10-6) @ Sharks (17-11-6)
Broadcast: SNET-P, CSN-CA+
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - Hmm, I think I'll go with the Sharks, but neither team impresses me at all.

Jess - Why can't we have tie games anymore? It wouldn't hurt my feelings to see this one end with no benefit to either team. Canucks, I guess.

It's Monday, hockey fans - you all know what that means! Best hits from the past week! Watch this and live vicariously through these guys to take out some post-weekend aggression...

Nothing easy for the Sharks.  But at least they still got two points out of it without it being a 3 point game.

4/2/13   |   ML31   |   3675 respect

Sigh...  And the Sharks may be slowly self destructing.  I've seen this a lot before the last 4 games.

Gawd, I hope not! Go Sharks!

Wow...  Now Couture with the teams 3rd goal...  A power play one at that.  Was reviewed but correctly called a good goal.

Sharks are looking pretty good here in the 2nd!

4/1/13   |   ML31   |   3675 respect

Wow...  Now Thornton just buried one in the back of the net...  2 nothing Sharks!

4/1/13   |   ML31   |   3675 respect

There you go...  Desjardins scored his first goal of the season....   Sure would be nice to get a regulation win here.

Nasville is taking the Blackhawks to a Shoot Out!!!! WTG Preds!

Thank you thank you thank you, Ducks, for a beautiful shutout against Dallas. See what happens when you play all 3 periods?

4/1/13   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

Thank God the Ducks are beating  beat Dallas!  Calgary is sucking azz, as I expected.  Edmonton is ahead 3-0

Newest report is that the Maple Leafs are talking to Kiprusoff.
I see the Ducks got Harry Zoln......whasisname ;)  (sorry, I just can't help but think of Wisniewski when I read his name ;) )

I also have to say that I REALLY like this shortened season.   Makes the season more interesting and the games more important.  In the 82 game schedule I generally don't even pay attention to teams other than the Sharks until March.  There just is little reason to.

(If it helps, Richard Sherman was a 6th rounder who was considered slow and there were low expectations, and people thought Pete Carroll was out of his mind for drafting Russell Wilson as high as the 3rd round). It has to be hard. I'm sorry...hopefully these young guys will prove to be awesome. Iggy was once a baby too (Kamloops? I remember him from WHL)

Yes, the Kamloops Blazers - when I lived there - so yeah, it's really hard to lose him to Pittsburgh.

Ryne Clowe is a healthy scratch tonight.  Leading to trade speculations....

The "other" big Flames fan in my town is actually at the Flames/Oilers game tonight.  She even made a sign for me.  I know damn well she is upset, probably getting drunk and yelling obscenities at the bench.

If they were trading for quality players that could help in the present, and help build for the future, I could be optimistic, but honestly the two college players they got for Iggy aren't even well known by those who follow college hockey. As for the draft picks, they are such unknowns. Although the draft talent is expected to be great, we really don't know. It has to be discouraging for the fans, the players remaining, and the taxpayers who are being asked to fund a new arena. I'm sure it will be fine, but damn, it sucks right now.

That's so hard - I had to go through that with the Seahawks when Carroll came in. One thing I had to keep telling myself as I watched all my fave guys departing (and maybe this could help?) is "Well, they obviously need something to change, because they're not winning anything with the way things are now." It hurts, but to look at it in a way that instills hope might help you move on faster? I dunno...it worked for me :)

Hey guys, sorry I wasn't around today, it was a family kind of day and I wasn't online at all, except for a few minutes on my phone.

The Flames have now traded Bouwmeester to St. Louis.  I'm devastated that my team is being decimated right before my eyes.  Rebuilding?? meh

They have received Reto Barra, which means they will likely trade Kipper next, even though he has reportedly  told the team he will not show up to whatever team he is traded to.  The game is on TV and I'm not even watching.

The Ducks aren't ticking me off yet tonight. (Emphasis on the word "yet")

Opening day for MLB today but I have found myself not taking in too much baseball.  Will be tuning into the Sharks tonight.  Flipping to the A's only during the commercial breaks.  That is how much MLB has fallen in my eyes.
