Monta Ellis' "Basketball Injury" Raises Significant Questions

Two Doctors Are Fairly Confident Monta Ellis Didn't Hurt Himself Playing Basketball
9/3/08
I thought I'd throw you a curve ball and talk about the NBA briefly. Not about a lame team name and ugly logo, but a lame excuse and ugly injury. Last week the Golden State Warriors released the news that their starting point guard had injured himself while "working out" at his home in Jackson, Mississippi. A workout so strenuous that he not only sprained his ankle, but tore a deltoid ligament as well, which will keep him from playing basketball for the next three months.
There was some initial speculation about how Ellis might have suffered such a severe injury. That noise was loud enough for ESPN's Marc Stein to consult two experts in sports medicine just to see what they had to saw about his injury.
Two experts in sports medicine consulted by ESPN.com, granted anonymity because they aren't privy to the specifics of Ellis' condition, said that a torn deltoid ligament is rarely seen in basketball. The deltoid ligament, the sources explained, is on the medial (big toe) side of the ankle while the structures typically involved in a high ankle sprain are on the opposite (lateral) side of the ankle. Involvement of the deltoid suggests a more serious rotational injury than those commonly associated with the NBA, the sources said.
In addition to his two serious ankle injuries, Ellis also has several cuts and abrasions on his leg. Ooops.
Injuring himself one month after getting one the largest raises in NBA history, I don't blame Ellis for pulling a Jeff Kent and trying to cover up some shenanigans, but as we learned with Kent, that doesn't help you win over your teammates as a leader.
Ellis is just lucky he didn't pull a Jay Williams. Golden State desperately needs his speedy services in their backcourt with the departure of Baron Davis. Speaking of which, if you're going to ride a bike in the offseason, Boom Dizzle did it the right way.
