Montreal Alouettes win 2009 Grey Cup Championship

Roughriders' half time lead destroyed, Al's win Grey Cup in last 5 seconds of the game

The Montreal Alouettes were the favorites to win the 2009 Grey Cup, by quite a margin, but they never once had the lead, at least not  until the last five seconds of the game.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders did exactly what they needed to do to win.  They came out strong right from the first kick off and shocked the Alouettes, showing them they would not be walked over in the final game of the season.   They led the Al's into the locker room at the half by a score of 17-3.  Calvillo and the rest of the Al's struggled, but anyone who has watched them all year long knew they weren't out of the game, not by a long shot.

The first points on the game came just after a fumble by Calvillo was recovered by the Roughriders and an just before the half ended, Fantuz caught the ball at the 2 yard line and the Roughriders had two seconds to get the ball across the goal line.  They opted for the Field Goal and moved out to a two Touchdown lead.  The Al's, however, were thankful it was "only" two TD's and came out in the second half a different team.

The Al's offence had spent very little time on the field during the first half, but that all changed in the second.  By the fourth quarter, the Al's defence had held the Roughriders to a single field goal, and their offence had managed a TD.  Saskatchewan fans were screaming for their team to fight and continue their dominance of the first half, but the Alouettes looked like a team on fire.

The fourth quarter was intense, with Calvillo looking like the veteran he is, calmly finding the open man and moving the ball always forward.  Unfortunately, the win of the game came down not to one team being so much better than the other, but rather, to a ruling on the field that the Saskatchewan Roughriders had too many men on the field, allowing the Al's a second attempt at a field goal with less than five seconds remaining on the clock.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders lost the game by one point.  They have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of and anyone who says differently wasn't watching this game.   They were the underdogs and not expected to get any kind of a chance against the arm of Anthony Calvillo.  The fact that they almost won this game is an incredible testament to their fortitude and their desire to win this.

Above all, it was one helluva game.

The ending was nuts, I watched the beginning, then stopped until midway through the 4th, and really glad I did.
