Reggie Theus is set to become to next head coach of the Sacramento Kings. I guess that means more Hang Time as well. Coach Fuller recently signed an extension with New Mexico State, which made him instantly eligible for a professional job (Seriously, is that part of the requirements now?). Of course, NMSU had to see this coming. Come make our basketball program relevant, then take your fancy suits to the next level.
The NBA is of course a place Theus is familiar with; having played for 13 years. A portion of that time with the Sacramento Kings. Does this give Theus instant credibility with the players?
The Kings' hire of Reggie Theus points out what has been clear for a long time: a (and perhaps the) key factor in being a good NBA coach is having credibility among NBA players. Because if you don't, many teams will simply tune you out, and it won't matter a lick if your offensive schemes are brilliant. That's the most important factor in a successful NBA coach. It doesn't matter if you've won 1,000 college games, multi-millionaire NBA players will rarely listen unless you've at least spent time in the Association. The successful coach who hasn't is the exception.
Sac Town Royalty isn't convinced yet, but remaining optimistic:
I refuse to say this is the dawn of a new era, as I'm sure The Family and Coach Fuller and Geoff will say on TV today. The dawn of the new era started last summer, when the franchise cut Rick Adelman loose and blew goodbye kisses to the Era of Glory and Awesomeness. The story of this team, this post-glory era has not been told. Musselman's team was the first part, Theus' team could be another blip or it could stretch for years. But don't get it twisted -- we're still in a deep mess. Hiring Reggie does nothing to change that, unless he can rebound and score in the post.I'm also not entirely sold. Short term I say the Kings get a spike in wins, long term Sacramento will be left wondering why they even fired Rick Adelmen.
