Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has backed his legendary ‘Old Guard’ to play an important role for the club. The Portuguese boss believes his fabled players have great potential in bringing more success to Chelsea.

The Old Guard united to help Chelsea acquire an important 1-0 victory over Everton on Saturday in the Premier League. Two of the greats combined together to provide the Blues with a much needed goal.

It was midfielder Frank Lampard who came up with the cross that defender John Terry received and put it in the back of the net in injury time to pick up three points on the road. Mourinho praised his duo and said that they had always been a source of inspiration.

Mourinho further revealed that the Chelsea veterans were vital to his long term plans at the club and he expected them to continue playing at the top level. The new players at Chelsea appear to be taking over the first-team, but Mourinho confirmed that the Old Guards would still hold a special place in the team.

“This is exactly why they belong to this project,” Mourinho said. “You could say this is a project for the future. We only want to do this project with young players that have a 10-years future, but no.

“We decided clearly from the beginning that the best way to develop the other guys is to have a nucleus of players like they are. They are important in the evolution of the team too.

“These older players in Chelsea they have a big history in the Champions League. They've experienced everything in the Champions League. The most important thing for us in the Champions League is to have a feeling of knockout Champions League for the players that never
did it.”
Mourinho also revealed that Terry, Lampard and left back Ashley Cole will be given new contract that ties them to the Blues beyond this summer. However, Mourinho added that all of the Old Guards must continue to prove that they are worth of the new deals.

The former Real Madrid manager said that each player’s contract will be based on his performance and the level of commitment they are showing. Mourinho added that the legends will not be given a heroic status unless they actually deserve it.

Chelsea are currently on top of the Premier League table with 60 points from 27 games. Arsenal are breathing down their necks, one point away at second-place. Manchester City is third, but they have the potential overthrow Chelsea from first place since they have a game in hand.
