It appears as if Wayne Rooney’s stay at Manchester United will be no less difficult than his moving away from the club. The new Manchester United manager David Moyes has announced that Robin van Persie will be preferred over Wayne Rooney in the first-team this season, unless the England international shows exceptional form to earn his spot back on the team.

The new Old Trafford boss revealed plans of using Robin van Persie as Manchester United’s primary striker. David Moyes also informed that Wayne Rooney will get opportunity to play when Robin van Persie is sidelined by injury or under-par form.

Wayne Rooney, who handed in his second transfer request in three years after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, has been linked with moves to Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward revealed last week that the 27-year-old English forward was set to stay for another season at Manchester United. Since then reports linking Wayne Rooney with an away move have drastically decreased.

However, Wayne Rooney himself hasn’t yet made any comments on the issue. With only two years left on his contract with Manchester United, the Premier League champions will be forced to sell Wayne Rooney at a cut-price if they don’t off-load their unhappy striker this summer.

Unlike last season, Shinji Kagawa is expected to play behind Robin van Persie in the No. 10 role, traditionally played by Wayne Rooney at Manchester United. With Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck eagerly waiting to break into the first-team, Wayne Rooney will have a difficult time earning back his spot at Manchester United.

“Wayne can play up on his own, he can play dropped in. Overall my thought on Wayne is, if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie, we'll need him,” said David Moyes, who is currently on Manchester United’s preseason tour of East Asia and Australia.

“I want to be able to play the two of them, I want to use Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez as well. I want to give myself as many options as possible.”
