Much to talk about as Manchester United grabs an unconvincing win over Galatasaray
Manchester United made a nervy start to their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win against Galatasaray at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. Darren Fletcher also made it to the news. The Scotsman finally made his return to football from a career-threatening bowel condition.
Sir Alex Ferguson, who feared Darren Fletcher might have to quit his football career, put in the midfielder with 11 minutes left on the clock. This was Darren Fletcher’s first appearance for Manchester United since November 22 last year.
It was a big day for another Manchester United midfielder as well. Michael Carrick scored his first Champions League goal in three years. The England international drew first blood just seven minutes after the game started.
Manchester United won the game but their performance reminded fans of the embarrassing exit they made from Champions League last season. Manchester United was given the easiest group to come out of in the previous Champions League campaign. Their group included Benfica, Basel and Oteul Galati.
Somehow, the English giants managed to get themselves kicked out of the tournament. This year they are placed with Galatasaray, Braga and CFR Cluj. Luck has favored Manchester United once again, but no guarantees on their success can be made.
Manchester United handed in an unconvincing performance against Galatasaray last night. Their lack lustrous performance also included their third penalty-miss this season. This time it was Nani who missed the chance of scoring a goal for Manchester United.
Galatasaray were quite unlucky. The match referee refused Galatasaray two penalty kicks in the game. Moreover, David de Gea made a number of superb saves to deny Galatasaray the opportunity to score. Galatasaray also stuck the woodwork twice.
The Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson will have a lot to think about now. Sir Alex Ferguson’s top notion will be to find the best usage of his new signings Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa. The legendary Manchester Untied manager will also have to find a way to balance his defense.
Galatasaray fought to score the equalizer till the end of the game. They enjoyed nearly half of the ball possession and committed half as much as fouls Manchester United did.
Manchester United had six shots on target from a total of 20 attempts. On the other hand, Galatasaray had three shots on target from a total 14 attempts. Manchester United played roughly throughout the game. They recorded 22 fouls, while Galatasaray were labelled with only 10.
