NASCAR - Is the Media Asking the Right Questions?
Is that "In your face first reaction" really necessary? Kyle Busch says no
I read this morning in my daily travels through NASCAR news that Tony Stewart had spoken out against the assinine questions the Media ask on a daily basis, and it got me thinking.

I don't  count myself in the ranks of Fox, ABC or even Speed when it comes to being a reporter, mostly because I'm not there at the races, but many times I have watched TV and found myself saying "What an effing stupid question!!"
Those of you who know me, know I yell at my TV during the race.  I admit it freely.  My family leaves if I get too heated up, but mostly they yell along with me.  So, I get what Tony is saying:

"Some of the questions I've been asked this year have absolutely blown me away more than anything we've done at the race shop or at the race track. But no — I mean, none of us expected it to be this good this soon. You can look at a transcript for the last 25 weeks and it'll tell you that. It's the same answer."

Now imagine if you are Kyle Busch and you've just wrecked, or been wrecked out of a race, and a dozen or so microphones are shoved in your face asking

"What happened out there?"

No wonder he high tails it to his hauler ignoring everyone.

Or how about if you are Jeff Gordon, and you are walking down the garage area being stopped every ten feet or so, with another microphone in your face, being asked

"Hey Jeff, How's the back?"

Yeah, I'd be grouchy, too.

So, what if you are Dale Earnhardt Jr., or Kevin Harvick, or Clint Bowyer, winless so far this season (or longer) and the number one question you get asked is

"Hey, (insert name), What's it going to take to get a win?"

Well, I'd be saying "If I damn well knew that, don't you damn well think we would have done it?"

Those of us who write to entertain you, the reader, try hard to come up with ideas and subjects that are going to keep you interested, but I have to agree with Tony, we need to use our brains.  If I was ever lucky enough to actually interview one of the "big names" in NASCAR, what would be my questions?  To be honest, one of the reporters I respect the most is Wendy Venturini, of Speed.  She presents what is called "The Real Deal" weekly on NASCAR Raceday, the show that runs for a couple of hours before whichever network is showing the race comes on with their pre-race report.  I would far rather, in every case except Fox, watch another hour of NASCAR Raceday.  Wendy comes from a racing background.  Her dad is Bill Venturini and her brother is Bill Jr, more commonly known as Billy, now a Team Owner and Crew Chief.  She knows what questions to ask, without pi$$ing off her subject, and you can bet they aren't the same questions every other reporter asks.

So what would YOU ask?

I'd ask Tony, "You've done just about everything.  Midgets, Sprints, Open Wheel, and now NASCAR, successfully.  Is there anything you would want to do in a car, any car, before you hang up the steering wheel for good?"

I'd ask Jeff, "At this stage of your career, you are a part owner in HMS, listed as an owner on Jimmie Johnson's team.  Have you given any thought to one day becoming a full fledged owner, once you retire from driving?"

And I'd ask Kyle:  "You are successful in every kind of car or truck you drive, bar none, but if there were no money differences between all the different types of cars, which one would you choose to drive first and foremost?"

And Kevin? What I want to know from him is "What do you enjoy most now that you have driven and been an owner? Driving or managing?"

But the question I'd ask Dale Jr might be the hardest, because with all that he has gone through, I'd want to know this "If you had a chance to go back and change any decision you have made in life, would you? And if so, what would you change?"

There you have my questions.  I sure wish I could get the chance to really ask them.  What would your questions be?

I would love to ask a guy like Mark Martin, Does the type of Car you drive really make a difference?

then  ask Richard Childress if he thinks with all the money around have most of the drivers lost their passion?

then Richard Petty, How much stuff did you guys really get away with in the old days?

then Pops what he thinks of today's drivers?

and I would love to hear the answer to Deb's question for Junior.

Awesome write-up Debi!  I for one would have to ask Tony Stewart: "You were criticized for announcing you were going to form your own team.  Many counted you out, and I'll admit, I had doubts as well.  But now I'm happy to admit my thoughts were wrong.  You've always been one to tell it like it is, so what do you really want to say to all your naysayers that said you couldn't be a successful owner/driver?"

Jr:  Do you honestly still enjoy racing?  I mean obviously winning would be better, but do you enjoy still getting in the car every weekend?

Tony:  If you win the cup this year as driver and owner, would you entertain going back to IRL and trying for the INDY 500 win?

Good write up Deb.  I've always looked at interviews as danged if you, danged if you don't.  They ask the same questions, and if you give the same answer, you are unimaginative, and if you tell what's really on your mind, NASCAR and the FCC come down on you hard.

GREAT article Debi, and I agree with you about Wendy. She rocks it behind the mic.
If I could ask my questions, they would go something kinda like this:

SMOKE: You seem to be much more at ease being your own boss, but the happiest I see you each year, is when El Dora rolls around. What kind of other Non Nascar  events would you like to be able to have a hand in, in the future?

ROBBY: You are one of the last of a dying breed out there, owner/ driver. You success off road is majorly impressive, but not so much on the pavements of Nascar. What is it that keeps you hunting down the sponsors, paying out the bucks, and trying each and every weekend?

ZIPPY: How did you make the transition from seasoned, well know driver, to an inexperienced youngster, after being with Tony for so long, and what do you miss the most about CC'ing for Smoke?

TERESA EARNHARDT: Now that you have seen the aftermath of the decisions you made for DEI in letting Junior go, would you have done it differently?

POPS: I have seen that twinkle back in your eye since being up in the box for BK. It seems you are feeling some of the old excitement again. Is mentoring a young racer more enjoyable, more satisfying, at the end of the day? And either way, why?

JUNIOR: My friend Debi has an awesome question for you, can I hang out, pop a top with you, and listen to your answer?

And finally, if I had ever been given the chance:

DALE SR: What was the one moment in your life that you knew, without a doubt, you would never do anything else, but drive a race car, and what one moment in your race career ,was the most life changing for you?

Awesome Andi.  Awesome.  I can't think of a question I would like more to ask than that last one.  If only we could.
