I don't count myself in the ranks of Fox, ABC or even Speed when it comes to being a reporter, mostly because I'm not there at the races, but many times I have watched TV and found myself saying "What an effing stupid question!!"
Those of you who know me, know I yell at my TV during the race. I admit it freely. My family leaves if I get too heated up, but mostly they yell along with me. So, I get what Tony is saying:
"Some of the questions I've been asked this year have absolutely blown me away more than anything we've done at the race shop or at the race track. But no — I mean, none of us expected it to be this good this soon. You can look at a transcript for the last 25 weeks and it'll tell you that. It's the same answer."

Now imagine if you are Kyle Busch and you've just wrecked, or been wrecked out of a race, and a dozen or so microphones are shoved in your face asking
"What happened out there?"
No wonder he high tails it to his hauler ignoring everyone.
Or how about if you are Jeff Gordon, and you are walking down the garage area being stopped every ten feet or so, with another microphone in your face, being asked
"Hey Jeff, How's the back?"
Yeah, I'd be grouchy, too.
So, what if you are Dale Earnhardt Jr., or Kevin Harvick, or Clint Bowyer, winless so far this season (or longer) and the number one question you get asked is
"Hey, (insert name), What's it going to take to get a win?"
Well, I'd be saying "If I damn well knew that, don't you damn well think we would have done it?"
Those of us who write to entertain you, the reader, try hard to come up with ideas and subjects that are going to keep you interested, but I have to agree with Tony, we need to use our brains. If I was ever lucky enough to actually interview one of the "big names" in NASCAR, what would be my questions? To be honest, one of the reporters I respect the most is Wendy Venturini, of Speed. She presents what is called "The Real Deal" weekly on NASCAR Raceday, the show that runs for a couple of hours before whichever network is showing the race comes on with their pre-race report. I would far rather, in every case except Fox, watch another hour of NASCAR Raceday. Wendy comes from a racing background. Her dad is Bill Venturini and her brother is Bill Jr, more commonly known as Billy, now a Team Owner and Crew Chief. She knows what questions to ask, without pi$$ing off her subject, and you can bet they aren't the same questions every other reporter asks.
So what would YOU ask?
I'd ask Tony, "You've done just about everything. Midgets, Sprints, Open Wheel, and now NASCAR, successfully. Is there anything you would want to do in a car, any car, before you hang up the steering wheel for good?"
I'd ask Jeff, "At this stage of your career, you are a part owner in HMS, listed as an owner on Jimmie Johnson's team. Have you given any thought to one day becoming a full fledged owner, once you retire from driving?"
And I'd ask Kyle: "You are successful in every kind of car or truck you drive, bar none, but if there were no money differences between all the different types of cars, which one would you choose to drive first and foremost?"
And Kevin? What I want to know from him is "What do you enjoy most now that you have driven and been an owner? Driving or managing?"But the question I'd ask Dale Jr might be the hardest, because with all that he has gone through, I'd want to know this "If you had a chance to go back and change any decision you have made in life, would you? And if so, what would you change?"
There you have my questions. I sure wish I could get the chance to really ask them. What would your questions be?
