Can Harvick sweep the weekend at Martinsville?
Last week it was Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano and so far this week, Kevin Harvick Inc. driver, Ron Hornaday and Johnny Sauter have shown the rest how to go about it. There is no doubt tempers will flare again today, but who will be involved this time?
Last week Jimmie Johnson won his 50th race. He sat down this week with Ned Jarrett and Junior Johnson, two others who have also won 50 races. Speculation continues as to how many races Johnson will eventually win, but Kyle Petty said it best - there's no way to tell. Darrell Waltrip would have won more if Dale Sr hadn't come along. Dale Sr would have won more if Jeff Gordon hadn't come along, and Jeff would have won more if Jimmie hadn't come along. Who will be the one to dethrone Jimmie? No one knows yet, but that's what makes if fun to watch.
Racing at the paperclip gets underway shortly and because of the rain, Kevin Harvick will start on the pole for this race, after dominating yesterday in the Truck race. After a dismal 2009 season, the teams at Richard Childress Racing are rebounding and again showing the strength of years past. Jimmie Johnson, however, is the favorite to win the race. Denny Hamlin is the only driver to beat him at the track in .....well, it seems like forever. Denny, however, has that torn ACL that he thought wasn't going to affect his racing at all. Yesterday it was announced that Denny would undergo the surgery to repair the ACL tomorrow. If necessary, he will start the upcoming races, but have a relief driver standing by to take over. His focus today has to be on winning the race, something he did last year, and rejuvenate his season.
Jeff Burton and Dale Earnhardt Jr., along with Ryan Newman, Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray all showed strength in practices, so any one of the could also be in contention today. The biggest question will be the rain. Showers are predicted all day long, with a small window of opportunity to race right around scheduled green flag time.
It's the first race with the return of the spoiler, and damn that car looks fine. Will it have any effect on the racing? We're about to find out.
I'm excited to watch racing, after missing last week's Bristol race, what about you? Who are your picks? Dark horses? Anybody but? Chat it up here, and don't forget your Playbook bets! I'm out of Q bucks - not even enough left for one single bet with only 40 remaining, but I have around 90 active bets, all in NASCAR I believe. What about you?
