NASCAR Nationwide Series: DRIVE4COPD 300 Live Thread

Danica Leads the Boys to the Green Flag [Nationwide Series Live Thread]

Last night we saw a wild and crazy finish to the Camping World Truck Series race.  They tried the maximum of three times for a green-white-checkered finish, but they were never able to finish the race under green.  It finally ended as the field took the white flag with Joey Coulter flying into the catch fence a la Bobby Allison.  Thankfully everyone walked away, but a lot of trucks will have to go to the junkyard after that disaster.  Will we see more of the same today?  There are 13 drivers in today's race who will also start tomorrow's Daytona 500.  These drivers, even if none of them win, will all gain valuable experience that they can use to their advantage tomorrow afternoon.

The field will be led by a woman.  That's right, Danica Patrick won the pole for this race in qualifying yesterday, and becomes the first woman in 18 years to sit on the pole for a Nationwide Series race.  The only other female to win a pole was Shawna Robinson at Atlanta back in March of 1994.  She has a strong car for this race, and both her mentor (Tony Stewart) and car owner (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) roll off the grid in the top 10.  Expect one or both of them to work with her throughout much of this race to help her along.  Smoke and Junior work great together in plate races to begin with, so if those two were to team up and say to Danica "follow us," she'll learn a great deal.

Speaking of Smoke, he's closing in on Dale Earnhardt's career number of victories at Daytona.  He's the winningest active driver at the famed superspeedway, and has absolutely dominated this Nationwide Series race in recent memory, much like Earnhardt himself did in the early to mid '90s.  He starts this race in 7th place, but expect him to be up front most of the day along with Dale Jr.

You can find the full lineup for this afternoon's race here.  Who is your pick to win?  How about your dark horse?

My Pick:

Tony Stewart
- If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Smoke knows what to do in the 300-mile event during Speedweeks, and he'll be up front battling for the win at the end...now if he could just figure out how to translate that success into Sunday...

Dark Horse:

Trevor Bayne
- The reigning Daytona 500 Champ starts on the front row with Danica.  The glass slipper fit, and he established himself very quickly as a rising star in NASCAR.  I expect him to stay near the front.

This is your place to be to discuss the happenings before, during, and after the race...LET'S GO RACING!

Thanks for that. I had no clue who he was.

And I thought last nights finish was crazy! James Buescher wins his first Nationwide race, and he was 11th coming off turn 4 as the leaders wrecked.

I'll go with Smoke to win too.

I'll take Austin Dillon as my dark-horse pick.
