NASCAR Nationwide Series on track at Daytona [Live Race Thread]

Trevor Bayne leads the way to the green, can he lead the way to the Checkers?

Blog Photo - NASCAR Nationwide Series on track at Daytona [Live Race Thread]The field for the Nationwide race at Daytona today looks like an elite NASCAR Sprint Cup race in some ways with a bunch of the Cup regular drivers, or Buschwackers (I loved that name) as they used to be called back with the series was sponsored by Busch beer.

Trevor Bayne, a former winner of the Daytona 500 will lead the field to the green flag today, with Sam Hornish Jr alongside.  You have to look back a few rows before you find one of the cup regulars, as Parker Kligerman, Travis Patrana and Austin Dillon start right behind.  I have to say, I love the names of some of these guys this year, but back on track!

Cup series regular, Kyle Busch, starts 7th, with Tony Stewart in 9th, Brad Keselowski 11th, Danica Patrick 12th, Dale Earnhardt Jr in 13th, and Kasey Kahne the last of the Cup regulars starting 19th.

Now of course we'll keep our eyes on the Nationwide series regulars, such as Austin Dillon, but the Cup drivers should show themselves fairly early on.  No doubt they will want to be up front as soon as possible, in case of an early wreck.

Who to pick?  Well, if Kevin Harvick were in the game, he might be an obvious pick, but he's sitting out this race.  If Austin Dillon has been paying attention to Harv, though, he could have learned a lot.  Kyle finished second in the truck race last night and has the advantage of starting close to the front, so he's a definite contender.  Tony?  Well, he's Smoke, and he could move to the front without us even really seeing him.  Then there's Dale Jr.

Who to pick, indeed!

The DRIVE4COPD 300 is being televised on TSN2 in Canada, and on ESPN in the US, so if you are watching and feeling like chatting, join us here.

A friend of mine is at the race. Attending the races was on his bucket list. I only hope he was not sitting in that section

So, the injured is more in the 10 or so people hurt. Eerie silence, everyone watching what they say.

Here is a better picture of the tire. Looks like it made it nine rows up. That's scary.

Here's that tire you see enter the stands on the replays.  Made it pretty far up there

Jim Utter tweeted helicopters being landed on pit road.

Jeff Gluck also tweeted he has seen five people removed on backboards.

I'm shocked that this doesn't happen more often.  I can't believe that an entire engine was able to get through the fence and it makes me wonder if all these tracks that hold races actually know if their fences/safety precautions for the fans can handle something like this happening

2/23/13   |   kantwistaye   |   4212 respect

Jeff Gluck also says he can see multiple stretchers being used in grandstands and medics working frantically.

2/23/13   |   kantwistaye   |   4212 respect

Both Kyle Busch's wife and Jeff Gluck have described that wreck as sounding like a bomb went off.  If everyone is okay, its going to be a minor miracle.

2/23/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

Larson's engine is in the grandstand. This is not good. It appears all the drivers are OK, but the fans no one knows yet.

2/23/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

Smith gets turned around, Stewart wins, Hornish 2nd, huge wreck. Larson got into the catch fence. He's alright, but there is attention being paid on the grandstand side.

I'm impressed with the way the Nationwide race has been going. For a bunch of youngins' they sure have been doing a great job.
Pastrana is a new fav of mine.

2/23/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

As I was typing that last post, it was reported that Dick (and Johanna Long) were released from the infield care center.

2/23/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

Michael Annett has been transported to the hospital for further evaluation. Also, there are unconfirmed reports that Jamie Dick has not been responding to radio transmissions.

2/23/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

That was predictable the way that pack was going there. Total chaos behind the top 6 or so.

Very impressive by Pastrana. No one wanted to draft him and he was still running top 10. Plus getting through that wreck.

Finally, why did people hate tandem drafting again?

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

And it's the Big One.

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

I feel so bad for Travis Pastrana!!! He is doing a f***ing fantastic job not wrecking that car, for all the times he keeps getting run into!!

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

dammit!! Just got called to work :(

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

Kenny Wallace tweeted this picture.

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

Kyle Busch blew up? blew a tire? blew his top??

Oh, it was the engine.

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

Well, and now word comes down thru twitter, of course, that Danica didn't necessarily blow the engine.  Apparently she could have switched to the other ignition and the car would have refired -  She said that herself during the interview "oh it restarted - that's disconcerting.

Right on there Debi. Can't believe that wasn't the Big One.

(Yes, I'm still watching, along with hydrating for a work out after the race, and reading.)

Watching race and overheard prez Joie Chitwood yell, "Hey you kids! Get offa my lawn!"

Mike Wallace and Reed Sorensen are the other two

Yellow flag!! Kurt Busch, Joe Nemechek, and two others......

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

I have to admit, I'm loving seeing Dale Jr and Jeffrey Earnhardt in this race.  For a while there they were even running nose to tail.

Where did Hornish go? I don't even think he's with those that are in the back on purpose.

Meanwhile, I called the Caps depressing, and they go on to win 4-1 with Ovie getting a hat trick for the first time in three years. I swear they do better when I don't watch.

Sorry, the game is still going. It's now 5-1 (assist by Ovie), and it's Ovie first *home* hat trick in three years.

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

I really love the look of Travis Pastrana's car.  Stands out in a crowd wink

2/23/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

At certain angles, Elliott Sadler's car looks like Dale Jarrett's old 88. That's all I got.

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

Danica blew up.

Okay, can we just talk racing now?

LOL no, I meant the hockey/golf/etc.

But of course I would choose NASCAR, just like you would choose IndyCar

Caution flag waves for Scott Lagasse Jr.  I do believe he got turned, the way he went around?

Yep, but it was Scott who pulled down in front of  Trevor Bayne.

dammit, Blake has damage

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

WTG Blake Koch!!!!! movin on up to the front!

2/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11853 respect

No one wants to draft with Kurt.

Leaders jostling between Tony, Matt and Kyle.  Anyone surprised??

LOL. Just looked at Danica's Nationwide stats. Her 7 top 10 tens in 58 career Nationwide races is so amazing!. How long before she is riding around in the back today?

I think he just might do a little better than that - kid can drive anything!  And yeah, DP??? Not holding my breath

I agree.  Kyle is enormously talented and I will probably do a feature again this year on the up and comers, as I have in years past.  He'll undoubtedly be one of the ones to watch.

Good to see some of the drivers I've "spotlighted" over the years are in this race, including Johanna Long and Blake Koch :)

Duncan, do you have a prediction for Kyle for this race?  He is starting half way through the pack, so will have to avoid wrecks, no doubt and get the hell outta there, but to the back? to the front?  Where will he finish?

Looking forward to watching Kyle Larson race full time in the Nationwide series for Turner this year. If you don't know who he is, well then you likely should get used to hearing his name as this kid has some serious talent. He has won just about everything he has ever raced in.

Tony Stewart who has raced against him on dirt said this week he will he be a Cup star. How confident his Smoke in saying that? I guarantee that. He then said, “If not, you can take everything I own, because I’m that confident. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when.”

I really thought that feature by Ray Evernham was great!!! Good explanation of how the cars draft.

Honestly, though, I have the TV sound turned waaaaaaay down when Rusty Whiner and Danasalvoice are on.  GAWD can't they find some announcers who aren't painful to listen to??

i'll root for him, best of luck!
