Indy is over, and the countdown to the Chase continues. There are now 6 races left until the top 12 are separated from the rest of the standings. For a few drivers, it's just a matter of a couple more races and they'll be locked in. For others, it's time to step up to the plate and make your presence known. The clock has run out for some already, and time is ticking fast for those 13-16 in points. Heading into Pocono, we look at who's hot and who's not. Here's this week's top 20:
NEW THIS WEEK: Jamie McMurray & Elliott Sadler
DROPPED OUT: Martin Truex Jr. & Travis Kvapil
20. Elliott Sadler:(previously NR) The DW idea about flames actually worked for a week. Sadler finished 4th at the Brickyard, despite only having a chance to pass cars during 2/3 of the race.
19. Jamie McMurray:(previously NR) Jamie Mac finished a very solid 6th last week and climbed back into the top 20 in points. It seems safe to say the clock has run out for Jamie for 2008, but at least he's showing he can still run a good race once in a blue moon.
18. Kurt Busch:(-2) Kurt is looking forward to defending his July Pocono title after becoming a pinball machine at Indy with Kevin Harvick and the SAFER barrier as the flippers.
17. David Ragan: Ragan asked AAA if they covered blown tires. AAA responded by saying that they refuse to cover the tire costs from Indy or they'd be forced to file for Chapter 11.
16. A.J. Allmendinger: (+2) Allmendinger captured his first career top-10 finish at Indy...nobody knows what he actually could've done if he would've been able to run more than 10 laps at a time.
15, Brian Vickers: (-3) Luckily for team Red Bull, Allmendinger stepped up when Vickers went kablooey.
14. Ryan Newman: (+1) Newman moves up the ladder a spot by default due to the 83's misfortunes.
13. Kevin Harvick: (-4) Happy was highly unhappy when he was in the right place at the wrong time...there goes my Trent streak!
12. Tony Stewart: (-2) Smoke announced he'd race the #14 next year in honor of A.J. Foyt...uuuunfortunately, he didn't quite run like A.J. did at the Brickyard.
11. Clint Bowyer: (+3) Bowyer got back into the chase with a (not so) stellar 19th-place finish. But when you get back into the top 12 thanks to your teammate finishing 37th, it's a good day.
10. Kasey Kahne: (+1) The Allstate girls threw Kasey a party after the race. While he didn't have a tire problem during the race, he certainly did when they were done with him!
9. Matt Kenseth: (-4) Kenseth is the last of the biggest losers this week. Matt didn't get the memo that Nickelodeon stopped showing KABLAM! quite a number of years ago.
8. Denny Hamlin: (+5) Hamlin was the one chaser who made the most of everyone elses problems. FedEx received another 5,000 letters after the Brickyard asking if Denny could change flat tires.
7. Greg Biffle: The Biff was 7th in the rankings last week, finished 8th at Indy, and stayed 7th in points. One of these days he'll return to victory lane, that day was not last Sunday.
6. Jeff Gordon: (+2) A-"cording" to teammate Jimmie Johnson, Jeff's tires were coming apart while leading the race!
5. Jeff Burton: (+1) Burton kept his 3rd spot in the standings with a solid top-10. Umm, Jeff, you do realize you're actually going to have to win more than 1 race per year if you ever plan on winning a championship, right????
4. Kyle Busch: (-3) It's not that Shrub finished terribly at the Brickyard, but that the 3 behind him from last week's rankings all finished ahead of him. He said he wasn't going to be a factor, and gosh darn it for once he was right!
3. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: (-2) Jr. finished 13th after getting a lap back and marching back towards the front. If anyone wondered how long a tire would last, he showed you...about 10 laps if you were lucky. Who woulda thunk it that nearly 20 laps on a set of tires would be too much?!
2. Carl Edwards: (+2) Cousin Carl was the only driver that could hang with the 48 all day, but backflips just werent' in the equation at Indy. As they say in the X-Games, this weekend could be vuja-de.
1. Jimmie Johnson: (+2) The 48 team jumps up to this week's top spot after starting on pole en route to a date with the bricks. It's definitely a great feeling when you win at a track where you normally go poof. Knaus didn't get suspended either, so they obviously won this race like good boys.
Don't miss the race this Sunday on ESPN, and tune in next week for more power rankings...same NASCAR time, same NASCAR station!
BK over and out!
