Who Will Conquer the Speeds in Michigan? [Quicken Loans 400 Live Thread]
Ford has apparently been struggling lately, but they do have the polesitter is Carl Edwards. The next three cars on the grid are Chevys, but not necessarily the Chevys would expect. Starting second is Kurt Busch, who continues to knock on the door for a victory for tiny Furniture Row Racing. Starting third is Kasey Kahne (OK, that isn't a shock), and fourth is Paul Menard, who's usually the "other" guy at Childress, but is quietly having a solid season while his teammates falter.
Other notables and their starting spots include:
Matt Kenseth: 8th
Kyle Busch: 9th
Juan Pablo Montoya: 10th
Denny Hamlin: 11th (his livery will look like Leffler's original FedEx scheme in tribute)
Tony Stewart: 14th
Brad Keselowski: 16th
Jimmie Johnson: 17th
Jeff Gordon: 29th
There a few driver changes, near as I can tell. The planned switch to AJ Allmendinger in the 47 for a few races starts this week. Bobby Labonte though was able to find another ride for this week, the 51 that Allmendinger vacated. Also running this week is Austin Dillon in the 33. He had to make Grandpa smile with his qualifying run that puts him 7th on the grid. Not bad for a car that's yet to have a finish better than 22nd this year.
Michigan is one of the faster tracks on the circuit. 13 separate drivers ran qualifying laps of over 200 mph. Thus, the action should be fast and furious. Coverage starts at 1:00 pm eastern on TNT. Q it up throughout the Quicken Loans 400.
