NASCAR Needed This Title Sponsor Last Week [Cup Series Live Thread]
I'll be the first to admit, racing at Fontana usually puts me to sleep, but maybe we can hope for the kind of finish we saw yesterday in the Nationwide race. Joey Logano sat on the pole and absolutely dominated the race, but a late race incident warranted a GWC finish. That set us up for a finish between a Shrub, the Biff, Keselowski, and the leader Logano. Logano got a shove from Biffle and he got tossed backwards. It turned into a 2-horse race between Kyle Busch and Greg Biffle. Busch edged ahead to take the win while Logano and Keselowski got together coming to the line, and around went Logano.
Jimmie Johnson has dominated at this track. His first win came at this track in 2002, and he's the winningest active driver here with 4 wins. However, Roush drivers have won this race the last 5 years, Biffle in '05, Edwards in '08, and Kenseth the other 3. Matt Kenseth starts 20th while Johnson starts 7th. But don't worry, Kenseth has never started in the top 20 in his 3 wins in this race. Kyle Busch also won the fall race in 2005 for his first career victory, becoming the youngest Cup Series winner at the time.
Jeff Gordon won the inaugural race here in 1997, and will start along side his teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. This will be a big test for Junior. If he comes out of here with a top 10 finish it would be huge. Meanwhile, I wouldn't expect Gordon to stay back there very long. They're back in the pack, but Dave Blaney was the shocker in qualifying, he'll start 5th. Juan Pablo Montoya ran up front all day last October, but finished 4th. Can he do that again, but this time get the win? We'll find out!
Matt Kenseth- Matt is the defending winner of this race. I know Jimmie Johnson runs great at this track, but as mentioned before, there's a Roush stranglehold on this February race.
Juan Pablo Montoya- He starts on the outside of the front row, and we now how well he ran last time he was here. I don't see him falling through the field, I look for him to be up front most of this race, and this could finally be the day he wins on an oval in a stock car.
