NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Auto Club 500 Live Thread

NASCAR Needed This Title Sponsor Last Week [Cup Series Live Thread]

AAA, or Auto Club, has the naming rights to California Speedway as well as this race.  They sure could've used AAA last week when the drivers kept running over that pothole in turn 2.  Anywho, today we head to SoCal for the 2nd race of the season, and Jamie McMurray, fresh off his win in the Daytona 500, starts on the pole along side his EGR teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.

I'll be the first to admit, racing at Fontana usually puts me to sleep, but maybe we can hope for the kind of finish we saw yesterday in the Nationwide race.  Joey Logano sat on the pole and absolutely dominated the race, but a late race incident warranted a GWC finish.  That set us up for a finish between a Shrub, the Biff, Keselowski, and the leader Logano.  Logano got a shove from Biffle and he got tossed backwards.  It turned into a 2-horse race between Kyle Busch and Greg Biffle.  Busch edged ahead to take the win while Logano and Keselowski got together coming to the line, and around went Logano.

Jimmie Johnson has dominated at this track.  His first win came at this track in 2002, and he's the winningest active driver here with 4 wins.  However, Roush drivers have won this race the last 5 years, Biffle in '05, Edwards in '08, and Kenseth the other 3.  Matt Kenseth starts 20th while Johnson starts 7th.  But don't worry, Kenseth has never started in the top 20 in his 3 wins in this race.  Kyle Busch also won the fall race in 2005 for his first career victory, becoming the youngest Cup Series winner at the time.

Jeff Gordon won the inaugural race here in 1997, and will start along side his teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr.  This will be a big test for Junior.  If he comes out of here with a top 10 finish it would be huge.  Meanwhile, I wouldn't expect Gordon to stay back there very long.  They're back in the pack, but Dave Blaney was the shocker in qualifying, he'll start 5th.  Juan Pablo Montoya ran up front all day last October, but finished 4th.  Can he do that again, but this time get the win?  We'll find out!

My Pick:
Matt Kenseth-
Matt is the defending winner of this race.  I know Jimmie Johnson runs great at this track, but as mentioned before, there's a Roush stranglehold on this February race.

Dark Horse:
Juan Pablo Montoya-
He starts on the outside of the front row, and we now how well he ran last time he was here.  I don't see him falling through the field, I look for him to be up front most of this race, and this could finally be the day he wins on an oval in a stock car.

This is your official race thread to discuss the happenings before, during, and after the race.

Pure non-sense. Harvick was almost in the wall the lap before too. When you race that high its the risk you take.

Damnit Keselowski!  There goes the fuel mileage calculations.

2/21/10   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Here comes Harvick, meanwhile Gordon was right about the engine going south.

2/21/10   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

So, could fuel mileage be the deciding factor today?

Scott Speed should just come down pit road, he's not keeping up with the pace car very well.

If Scott Speed has to come in, that gives the lead back to Jeff Burton.

Umm and 2006 he finished 10th. so 4 years in a row he finished 13th or better. I say that is one hell of an arguement. Last year is the only season Kyle missed the Chase, even though he moved to a new Team with a new Car. So in 4 years added up Kyle finished 10+5+10+13=38, what is Juniors number???

...and in 2006 Junior finished 5th.  Seriously, when both of them are running outside the top 10 and neither are really doing anything to move forward, it looks so damn retarded to make fun of one and act like the other is soooo much better.

I find it Hilarious, since I can look at the last 3 years final standings.

2009- They both missed the Chase, so 13th doesn't look any better than 20-something.
2008- They finished 10th and 12th in the Chase respectively, neither of them were ever a threat in the final 10 races.
2007- This is really the only year where you have a legitimate argument.
