Can Johnson Put the Title Out of Reach or Will Lightning Strike Twice? [Cup Series Live Thread]

11/15/09 in NASCAR   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Last week at Texas, Jimmie Johnson crashed out on the 3rd lap and finished the day 38th.  Mark Martin finished 4th and more than cut Jimmie's points lead in half.  Today, Johnson starts 3rd while Martin starts 10th.  They've won the last 4 Phoenix races.  Martin dominated here in the spring, winning from the pole.  Just a couple years ago, that seemed impossible, then Jeff Gordon became the first driver to ever win from the pole at this track in the spring of 2007.  Now it's happened 2 more times since then.  A non-Chaser is on the pole, Martin Truex Jr.  Track position is key at Phoenix, and Johnson will have the advantage to start off, 7 spots ahead of Martin on the starting grid.

First-time winners?  Well, it's not really a common theme here.  Alan Kulwicki won the inaugural race here back in 1988, the day we were introduced to the now infamous Polish victory lap.  Speaking of that, Kurt Busch has come up with a bit of a twist to Kulwicki's celebration, going the right way, but driving backwards the whole way.  After winning last week at Texas, he'll start 2nd today.

If Johnson finishes 4th or better in the final 2 races, he wins the championship.  Mark Martin knows what he has to do, and he'll certainly be trying to do it this afternoon.  He'll be out to win both of these final 2 races and hope that Johnson has another problem in one of them.  The fat lady isn't singing, but she's warming up her voice.  With all the stories surrounding this race, who wins it?

My Pick: Mark Martin

He won here back in the spring, and there's no reason to think he can't dominate here again.  His wins, except for Darlington, have all been on flatter tracks this year, Michigan, Chicago, Loudon, and here at Phoenix.  Look for Mark to do his job to try to win this championship.

Dark Horse: Martin Truex Jr.

I'm gonna go out on a bit of a limb here and pick the pole sitter.  He's trying to win a race before he leaves DEI, and recently the pole jinx has been broken here.  He may just be able to steal one today.

This is your official open race thread to discuss the happenings before, during, and after the race.

Gonna be a good one with Martin still statistically in it. Doing some work with NASCAR.com and wanted to let you guys know about TrackPass. Gets you up close and personal with all the drivers and pit crews - pretty amazing experience and a great way to watch the race.

I am not a JJ fan by any stretch, and the debris caution thing just doesnt hold water, as they now actually show the debris that they threw a caution for, because of this very reason.

But regardless, you are entitled to your opinion. I wont be here either.. I will be in Homestead!  Have fun next w/e Bryan!

I'm not jealous, the truth does hurt, and that's all I will say.  Like I said, Johnson fans will never admit it, but there IS favoritism, but since it ALWAYS benefits Johnson, they'll never admit it exists.  We'll see just how well Johnson does when NASCAR starts favoring somebody else.  I could care less what people think of what I've said.  If you disagree, oh well, my life still goes on.  I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but to really be naive to the fact NASCAR doesn't play favorites is almost laughable.  Have a good night, everyone.

Show me some proof and I will but to just run of at the mouth and all you can come up with is cautions is what is laughable.

Here's what I like about discussions:
It's good to have some controversy. It seems being bored to death is over-rated. Can you say Denny Hamlin? Put a little spoon in the pot for goodness sakes. Show your personality.

Here we go again no one likes a winner unless it is their guy or team and they come up with every BS excuse they can think of to why the guy or team isn't that good or doesn't deserve it. Pathetic!!

It is very feasible, Andi.  If Johnson is falling behind, voila, a caution comes out for debris.  If he's leading like he is today, no phantom debris caution is thrown.  If Johnson's car is better on the shorter runs, more cautions are thrown so he can finish as close to the front as he can.  It certainly has been fixed in his favor, whether people want to admit it or not.  NASCAR has done everything they can to help Jimmie Johnson, and I for one am sick of the blatantly obvious favoritism.

What did you even watch the race there was at least 3 cautions thrown for debris while he was leading today. Got to come up with a better theory then that bub.

Wake me up when NASCAR has a year when they stop fixing races to set up Jimmie Johnson to win a championship.  I said it before and I'll say it again, they made damn sure to help Johnson every race leading up to Talladega.  NASCAR won the championship for Jimmie, NOT Jimmie himself.  I know Johnson fans will vehemently disagree, but the truth is sometimes hard to swallow.  Maybe next year after their little golden boy makes history, NASCAR will fix the championship for someone different.

OK what the hell are you talking about dude. I up until you started posting crap like this thought you were a pretty smart guy when it comes to Nascar but now you have got to be kidding me. I understand you don't like the guy but to start shooting off at the mouth about some waked out conspiracy theory just shot any credibility you had.

Kramer do you seriously think this was all fixed. With the money involved in these teams, from the sponsors, do you honestly think any non-Hendrick driver or owner would in any shape or form stand or tolerate Nascar "Fixing" anything.

Dude I dont like JJ pulling it off, but there is no way I am drinking your kool aid. I have been around Nascar 20 more years than you, and that is just not even feasible for so many reasons.

i have already came to the conclusion if Jimmie Johnson wins a 5th straight title next season i am DONE watching NASCAR for good

If they want to keep playing favorites, he will.  If NASCAR doesn't fix any races next year, Johnson won't finish top 5 in points and it will prove to everyone that he can't win a title without NASCAR's assistance.

I'm not shocked they lost.  I'm going to be 100% honest, they absolutely deserved to lose that game today with the way they played, and in a way I'm kind of glad they did lose because it avoids haters saying, if they would've come back to win, "they got lucky."  They sucked that entire game.
