NASCAR announces first five inductees into the Hall of Fame
First Five Revealed - NASCAR Hall of Fame
Twenty-five were nominated in early July and today the five inaugual members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame were announced.

They twenty-five nominees were about what you'd expect, some of the pioneers, some of the well known drivers, some of the well known owners.  All in all, it was an extremely varied bunch.  Each year more will be nominated, and each year, more will be inducted.

This year's nominees included Lee Petty, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Bobby Allison, Donny Allison, Bill France Sr. and Bill France Jr, Buck Baker and Cale Yarborough.  It also included Fireball Roberts, Red Byron and Junior Johnson.  Fifteen of the nominees won't be inducted this year, but look for them in years to come.

The five inaugural members will be honored at the Hall of Fame opening in May 2010.

This years inductees are:

Dale Earnhardt
Richard Petty
Junior Johnson
Bill France, Sr
Bill France, Jr

We'll have a more in depth look at this years inductees later this evening.

All 5 inductees are iconic figures in the world of Nascar and all 5 had a huge impact one way or another in making racing what it is today.  I cant argue against any of them being part of the first class

Honestly Scott? I can. I am a Die Hard Sr fan, and yes, this is a class worthy of induction, however, if they had gone about things properly, the men that shaped the sport to begin with should have been inducted first. Now that is just my opinion, of course. I am glad to see Bill France Sr in the first class, he belongs there without a doubt, but I really feel like they kind of slapped some of the boys in the face, such as Red Byron, Fireball Roberts, and the Flocks, to name a few. Without those names, we never would have heard of Petty or Earnhardt!

Regardless, I loved Dale Sr to death, and always will, so I am glad to see him honored. Every man up there belongs in their own right, just not "right now".
But,what the heck do I know, I'm just a dumb, beer swilling, redneck Nascar fan!

These nominees don't shock me at all.  Every one of them on the ballot were deserving of the honor.  I expected Dale Sr, Petty, and Big Bill France to be there, but I'm a little surprised at France Jr. getting in before some of the other pioneers.

Isn't Richard and Lynda Petty just about the cutest couple ever??? She's a hoot! I vote for Richard's wife!

I still haven't figured out why NASCAR needs its own Hall of Fame where there's already a Motorsports Hall of Fame that France, Sr. founded and that looking at recent inductees, has been all but ignoring non-stock car forms of racing of late. Is NASCAR that averse to sharing?

I'm of the opinion that they screwed up with the nominees.  If they hadn't nominated anyone after, say 1970, we would have chosen from the pioneers of the sport, not the most famous most recent drivers and Dale Earnhardt wouldn't have been inducted this round, neither would Bill France Jr.
I agree with Bill France Sr and Junior Johnson, and maybe even Richard Petty, but I agree that earlier pioneers should have been inaugural inductees.

I would have liked to have seen Ned Jarrett and Cale in there also.....................................

i was personally thinking Fireball , Cale, or an Allison boy being inducted before Dale and France Jr was inducted in, needed to get the true pioneers in the sport inducted first...

Wasn't it Brian France himself who said he would get back to their "ROOTS" in NASCAR at the Start of the Season. He promised that LOUD and CLEAR. When this list came out it proved that was all Lip Service. And now that the VOTE is in, there is no doubt, that it was a BOLD Faced LIE.

For all the simpletons everywhere. without "Big" Bill France there is no Bill France, Jr. without Lee Petty, there is no Richard Petty, without Raymond Parks, there is no Money, and without Louis Jerome' Red" Vogt, Henry "Smokey" Yunnick, Marshall Teague, and the like, there is no innovation. And without the Characters like "Rapid" Roy Hall, Lloyd Seay, Tim Flock, and Edward Glenn "Fireball" Roberts, there is no excitement and there is NO NASCAR....Come on People.

The original 5 are great choices, I've been an Earnhardt fan since day one, and Petty, was known and loved by me since I was 9yrs old. First I think though , there should have been more than 5 original inductee's, more to the tune of 20 or so, then we would have had many of the originators chosen too,
. I would expect though Nascar is keeping it in now a day terms though, guys that the young crowd can relate to, and that'll keep all the young ones interested, and then it remains a family sport,  Don't worry though the Fireballs, Yunicks, Flocks, and Parks will be in, but for now we need to keep it so the young and future of Nascar remain interested.

What better way to see it as when he took Rockingham off the schedule and took one of the races from Darlington for the likes of Kansas City and Phoenix and Chicagoland.  In my humble opinion, those are not the roots.  You wanna get back to the roots, put the original tracks back on the schedule and let the others fight over the open dates.
