Is it going to be a Denny Hamlin Championship year? Today could be the break away day
Am I happy about that? Obvious answer would be no. I can't stand him.
But then if you read any of my blogs, you already know this.
Perhaps Brad Keselowski can diffuse the momentum Denny has gained. After all, it was BK who stormed to the win at Chicagoland when Denny ran out of gas, in the first Chase race. Tally so far? Denny 2 wins, BK one.
Yes, Denny wants to fulfill his promise to Joe Gibbs, and win the Championship he promised him when he was 10 years old (if you've seen the "It's my Chase" commercial, you know about this promise). But Bad Brad is willing to pull out all the stops to win this. Penske Racing has been in a bit of a flux this season, with the 22 car and all the drama over there. Through it all, Brad has remained aloof from the drama, simply focused on his goal. That focus seems to have rubbed off on Sam Hornish Jr., currently in the pilot's seat for Penske in that 22, and Sam is showing he can drive in NASCAR, and drive well. Unfortunately, he will give up that seat at the end of the season. One can only hope he will find another quality ride.
Jimmie Johnson and his crew chief, Chad Knaus, have been quietly doing what they do best. They get the cars set up the way they like, the way they can win, and accumulate points. No, Jimmie doesn't have a win yet in the Chase, but Dover could be the game changer. He is dominant at Dover. Somehow they have been able to calculate fuel mileage, negotiate pit road and be there at the end.
But wait. There is a fourth driver who definitely has a chance to win it all. In his first season with Hendrick Motor Sports, Kasey Kahne has managed two wins, only one less than Jimmie, and one more than both Jeff and Dale Jr. He could very well be the dark horse who will take it all.
Normally, I wouldn't throw this out in the midst of a Live Race Thread, I would wait for the next edition of This Week in NASCAR, but I have to admit I'm rather disgusted with Kurt Busch. He will make the move to Furniture Row Racing before the end of the season, and in fact will take over the driver's seat at Charlotte. Regan Smith??? Well, no one seems to know where he will end up.
Kurt though, has chosen, yet again, to open his big, fat, trash-talking mouth that should remain closed. He has come out and publicly said that he is "tired of driving second hand cars" for Phoenix Racing. In fact, Kurt has demonstrated his ability to make people everywhere want to shake their heads and wonder why he isn't locked up somewhere safe. Just read the article for yourself. Seriously.
But back to his comments about Phoenix Racing. Busch has wrecked so much of their equipment, they have been forced to purchase cars, instead of building them. Yet Busch criticized the team that gave him a chance, saying:
“Everybody knows this 78 car has much more potential in it,” Busch said. “The 51 is running equipment that’s four years old, 2008 stuff. It’s very obvious why to me this is not a lateral move."
Yep, I guess that's why Regan Smith is 23rd in points, while Busch, stellar driver that he is, sits in 25th. Regan, I wish you all the best, and hope you find a quality ride. Kurt, I wish you a slap upside the face that will knock some manners into you.
The race is set to start soon, so join in and post your picks and thought about the race. Or post your thoughts about Kurt and Regan, if you are so inclined. I did.
