NASCAR in the Desert [Sprint Cup Live Race Thread]

Let's talk racing in the Desert!

Blog Photo - NASCAR in the Desert [Sprint Cup Live Race Thread]Although there are sports galore around the world today, in my mind, none are more exciting than NASCAR.  So, I thought why not have a good old fashioned Live Race Thread?

The pre race show is about to get underway, with the Penske Fords of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski on the front row.  The drivers are headed to the Drivers' Meeting, and they do so on the Red Carpet.  Nothing is quite like Las Vegas.

Yesterday Brad Keselowski led the way in the Nationwide race, with Kyle Busch unable to capitalize on Brad's car problems, as he had problems of his own.  Kes had alternator issues, while Kyle had a car that seemed to be held back by a parachute, when he stepped on the gas. Kyle Larson finished third.

However, that was yesterday, and today we are ready to go Sprint Cup racing.  Vegas always has odds on who has the best chance to win, strictly for fun, of course, and today is no different. Of course, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr., by virtue of their wins in the first two races are favorites, but Vegas book-makers also take past performances into consideration.
Odds to win Kobalt Tools 400
Jimmie Johnson 5-to-1    Matt Kenseth 7-to-1      Kyle Busch 7-to-1     Kasey Kahne 8-to-1     Kevin Harvick 10-to-1     Dale Earnhardt Jr. 10-to-1
Brad Keselowski 10-to-1    Denny Hamlin 10-to-1     Tony Stewart 12-to-1     Joey Logano 12-to-1     Jeff Gordon 15-to-1     Kurt Busch 15-to-1
Carl Edwards 15-to-1     Clint Bowyer 30-to-1      Ryan Newman 30-to-1

As the Drivers meeting continues, and the Crew Chiefs are given this little handy stat sheet to help them get in and out of the pits and make sure they follow all the rules:

Kevin is pretty focussed.

Oh yeah, and in case you missed it, Tony "Smoke" Stewart is having a lot of fun these days, although some people don't like it.  He's Eastbound and down.....

So who is your pick today? Smoke? Happy? Jr? Kes? Or someone without a nickname? Is there one?

Let's go racing!!

One thing I am noticing after 3 races is the new mentality for these drivers.  Guys like Jr, Harvick and now Keselowski...who already have won and basically have clinched their spots in the championship chase after only 3 races... are willing to take more chances than they normally would.  With the onus strictly on wins, it looks like drivers are going to be more aggressive than they were last year and I expect more guys to push it to the limit...ie, running out of gas or staying out front while others pit late...especially if that driver has already got a win.

It's going to be hell for us fantasy nascar nerds  wink

I have to say, I am loving this new mentality.  It used to be all about the wins and once again it is.  If we have multiple winners, and drivers with multiple wins, a single win just may not be enough to have a spot in the Chase, although it is still likely.  No one is taking that chance, however, and there are chances being taken that we never would have seen before.  Can't wait for Bristol!

No love for the 3.  Nope.  I still say if they want to race the 3 (because it was Richard's number first) they need to change the stylization of the number on the car.  The way it is will always be Dale Sr's 3.

Stuff is changing quickly now.  Still the same drivers near the front, except for Logano, but that doesn't break my heart.

I think my "once upon a time" attitude that I respected all drivers has changed as I've gotten older and more knowledgeable about the sport.  I don't like the arrogance I see in some of the drivers and it makes me not want to cheer for them or be happy when they do well.

I agree Debi, they should change that 3, So many different styles they could choose from , it could be done.
lol, i have long had my favs and non favs, i really don't care what they do, doesn't change my mind about them.

Congratulations to Bad Brad Keselowski! Jr's engine sputtered at the end, and it was just enough for Brad to pass him for the win.  Jr. has three top fives to start the season.  Brad pretty much guaranteed a spot in the Chase.

Congrats to Brad! Great race.

Well it's Dale Jr leading about 3/4 of a lap shy on fuel.  Bad Brad has fuel to spare and is right behind his former boss, hunting the win.  Nine to go

Seriously Joy is making me laugh today. I always love the "stats" at the track and who it predicts will win. This is Vegas, and stuff changes.

I absolutely love the look of that 88 paint scheme today.  And he's running third.

For a minute there, I thought that was the 78 of Truex Jr. blowing up again.  Sorry for Josh Wyse, but happy it wasn't Martin

"It's only the 3rd race, but it is a pivotal one"...lmao Oh Mike Joy you are hilarious
