For sports bettors winning and losing takes a back seat to covering the spread. A team could look fantastic, win the game by double-digits but still fail to cover a large spread. And for bettors, that performance would be completely meaningless. Many times the best teams in basketball, whether in the pros or college, are not necessarily the best bets. In the NBA the Miami Heats and Oklahoma City Thunders of the world always receive the most betting action, but do not always cover the most spreads. The average gambler loves to bet the favorites and sportsbooks know this and usually jack-up those lines. If the Heat are true five-point favorites, then most times the sportsbooks will open them as seven-point favorites and then let the public drive up that number even more.
The season may be only a couple of games in, yet the 76ers have already covered a 12-point and 9-point spread—in fact, they actually won both of those games straight-up. The best ‘against the spread’ teams this season will probably be squads like the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, and Philadelphia 76ers—teams that are expected to be bad, but are better than most people give them credit for. Double-digit spreads are difficult to cover in the NBA, particularly when teams take out their starters during blowouts. A few meaningless baskets at the end of a game could easily turn a losing bet into a winning one.
Here is a quick look at the top five ATS teams through the first few games of the season:
1)Orlando: 3-0
2)Detroit: 2-0
3)Milwaukee: 2-0
4)LA Lakers: 2-1
5)LA Clippers
Here is a quick look at the five worst ATS teams:
1)Chicago: 0-2
2)Memphis: 0-2
3)Oklahoma City: 0-2
4)New Orleans: 0-2
5)Portland: 0-2
If you take a look at both lists, the best ATS teams are coming for squads that are considered to be ‘bad’ teams—with the exception of the Clippers. And most of the worst ATS teams are squads that are considered to be ‘good’ teams.
