Last year the Portland Trailblazers had the difficult, but enviable situation of deciding between Kevin Durant and Greg Oden. This year the lucky NBA Draft Lottery winner will have an even tougher decision: Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley. That's basically the equivalent of a blogger deciding to post about Marisa Miller or Brooklyn Decker. Tough call. You win either way.
At the midseason point, I suggested that regardless of team needs (Heat w/ D-Wade already) that Derrick Rose is the choice and nothing the Memphis point guard has done this last month has made me change my mind. Rose's biggest weakness, if you could even call it that, was his ability to consistently hit a jump shot. He can already get to the rim when he chooses, put his teammates in perfect position to score and play excellent defense. But the consistent perimeter shot? Against the best defensive teams he's had to play against in the tournament, Michigan State and UCLA, Rose has been hitting his jumper. The Simeon High School (Chicago) product also provides the necessary court leadership you want from a point guard. If there's a weakness, it's clearly his diet. You don't exactly want to invest millions in an athlete who's diet consists of candy, liquid candy, syrup, more candy and did I mention candy.
With Michael Beasley you're getting a legit 6'10 big man who has all the necessary post-moves, athleticism and three-point shot to score aplenty in the pros. With the pick and pop becoming NBA team's regular offensive play, Beasley size and ability to shoot is invaluable.
So why do I still prefer Rose?
A do-everything point guard with size and court vision can effect a game more than a high scoring post player, which is why I'd still take Rose if I were the Miami Heat. Dwyane Wade will instantly become more effective at the 2 spot. In fact, Rose will be much better than Wade in just two short years.
Beasley can score, but his defense vanishes from time to time. Does he want to be one of the greatest? I know that answer is yes with Rose, but I haven't seen the same fire with Beasley. The dude is going to score 25+ a game, no doubt. Is he going to bring the effort needed every night to turn around the New York Knicks or Heat? I'm not saying he won't, but when making the decision between these two there's more questions with the Kansas State forward, however small they may be, when it comes to attitude. There's been a lot of talented players drafted high, what's between their ears separates the good from the great.
I'll stick with Rose. Who do you think should go first?
