NBA Draft Results: Winners And Losers
Kevin Pritchard Is Working Over The NBA
It may still be premature to put together one of these typical 'Winner and Losers' posts, because I'm certain Kevin Pritchard still has it in him to work over one more general manager.

I realize I have it in the bag for the Trail Blazers GM, but how can you not? He's got a plan - which already puts him a step ahead of 75% of the league, and he's thoroughly executing that mission, not content to just sit around and let things happen. Pritchard is making it happen, and made a lot of moves last night, determined to break his one night trade record for the previous draft.

Obviously Chicago and Miami made out well, but here are the other draft night successes:

The Winners

Portland Trail Blazers I'm still not positive I have this right, but in the end Pritchard acquired the draft's top point in Jerryd Bayless, a 4th year pro in Ike Diogu, and then arguably one of the best European stars in Nicolas Batum, whom he can let develop in France for a few years. In all of his wheeling and dealings, he also picked up a handful of future draft picks.

As I stated last night, Jerryd Bayless is the perfect compliment for Greg Oden and Brandon Roy. You may not like that he passed on Brandon Rush, but with Martell Webster and Travis Outlaw already filling that need, I don't think the former Jayhawk was necessary, even though, I too, think he's an immediate impact player.

Enjoy the run you're about to begin, Blazer fans. John Canzano summed the night up well:
"Dr. Deal entered the day with five draft picks, and so the Blazers selected Brandon Rush (Kansas), Darrell Arthur (Kansas), Joey Dorsey (Memphis), Omer Asik (Turkey) and Mike Taylor (Iowa State). Then, Pritchard traded every one of them away.

Josh McRoberts is gone, too. Also, Jarrett Jack gone. Oh, and Pritchard traded for Ike Diogu. Pritchard also netted Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless, the No. 11 pick. And the Blazers also end up with Nicolas Batum of France, which amounts to a clever use of a Euroleague roster pawn. Also, Portland got four future second-round picks.

Before Thursday, maybe you believed the Blazers needed a small forward and a point guard. Today, what they need is roll call.

If you're a Blazers fan you have to love all the good action, and the drama, and the fact that the front office of your basketball franchise is playing to win. And as long as Pritchard has the confidence of owner Paul Allen, and the autonomy to work deals, draft day is always going to be more fun in Portland than it is in Chicago, Los Angeles or New York. Or probably anywhere else.

Don't take this for granted, Portland."

New Jersey Nets We won't be able for formally grade New Jersey's draft night until the 2010 free agency period ends. If Lebron James is a Net, A+++++. If not, well, they still succeeded in drafting the best available talent last night.

Brook Lopez fills a desperate need in the post. When he left for Dallas, Jason Kidd was the team's top rebounder. Sean Williams could be a formidable post player, but only with a legit center down low alongside him. At No. 10, this may be one of the best valuable picks in the draft if not for...

Stealing Chris Douglas-Roberts at 40. CDR reminds me of Tayshaun Prince in numerous ways. They both won a lot of games in college, have a slightly awkward game, but always manage to get it done. He may be more like Prince, but I'll go on record as calling Douglas-Roberts the next Michael Redd. Ryan Anderson is no slouch himself.

Los Angeles Clippers This is not a total winner, but since I have such low expectations for the Clips on draft night, they can only be viewed as having a postive night.

Eric Gordon was unfortunately the victim of an injury to his wrist, and a very severe injury to the psyche of his college team. The kid is good, real good, and may very well lead all rookies in scoring.

I'm not terribly huge fans of DeAndre Jordan and Mike Taylor, but getting those guys with yes, tremendous upside potential, in the second round is a steal. It's entirely possibly that Jordan is an All-Star in five years.

Memphis Grizzlies O.J. Mayo and Darrell Arthur. Someone check on Chris Wallace, asap. Did someone competent tie him down and make some late night wheeling and dealing? I love Kevin Love, and he too would have been a good fit, but no one in the NBA needed star power more than the Grizzlies.

The Losers

Atlanta Hawks They didn't have a single pick, which can be viewed as a positive. However, unfortunately they had the huge loser of a fan sitting right behind the 'green room' who embarrassed himself throughout the night while wearing a Hawks jersey. I know you're all not like that DB, but a rough night for the ATL nonetheless.

Charlotte Bobcats Is D.J. Augustin going be more capable of running the team than Raymond Felton? Brook Lopez was there for the taking. I've never been a fan of the trigger, dribble happy point guards. I did like the Kyle Weaver pick, a defensive specialist who could become a Bruce Bowen time sans that cheating. Alexis Ajinca at 20? Meh.

Golden State Warriors Anthony Randolph is EXACTLY the same player as Brandan Wright, whom they drafted last year in this range. For a team capable of winning right now, Darrell Arthur sure seemed to make a lot of sense.

Sacramento Kings Jason Thompson at 12? Way to draft a role player with a lottery pick. At least Spencer Hawes will have some company in this department. Allow me to list the players who would have made more sense: Mario Chalmers, Brandon Rush, J.J. Hickson, even Anthony Randolph and Kosta Koufos.

Your winners and losers?

There's no way I can put Portland as a winner.  The only player who would've been a better fit than Rush for them was Rose, who they never were going to get.  Being able to stash Batum away in Europe is really nice, but Bayless is a wasted pick.  Portland will regret that move for a long while.

The Nets are definitely winners though.  They are very strong at the 4 and 5 spots now.  Well done by them.

The Sonics are winners too.  Westbrook and White are peices they definitely needed, and the can stash Ibaka overseas as well.

Don't want to look silly so why am I commenting? To thank you for helping me understand what the hay happened...I couldn't for the life of me keep up with the trades. Then "late breaking news" on ESPN? I had to stay awake waaay later than I wanted. I knew I could count on you to help clear this up for my feeble mind!

Could we get someone that has accutally watched the Blazers play more than once in the past year tell me why passing on Rush was such a mistake?  I admittadly haven't seen Rush play much because I hate the Big-12, but Portland doesn't need another slasher/inside player.  They already have Oden, Aldridge and Brandon Roy.  Portland needs a lights-out shooter (like Jerryd Bayless) to hit open jump shots.

I'm sure Rush will be a good player, but passing on him for a better fit now (Bayless), another big rebounder (Dioku), and two future picks while giving up a back-up point guard (Jarret Jack) is a good deal.

And thinking the Timberwolves will win more games than Portland next year is ridiculous, they'll be lucky to win 30 games next year while Portland will improve on a .500 year and be able to add Greg Oden to the line-up.

How quickly fans around the rest of the league forget that the Blazers won 41 games (with 13 in a row at one point) in 2007-08.  With Roy and Aldridge as "current busts", I'm looking forward to our "future busts" in Oden, Bayless, and Fernandez.

Portland sounds like a 20-game winner in '09 to me.

I have to qualify my input by acknowledging that I don't follow the college game as closely as I think many others on this site do. Still, here are some of my thoughts:

  • I'll buy the idea that Bayless fits the bill for Portland (I was interested in the Clippers grabbing him at 7). I like what the Blazers are doing, I like their roster, but I'm not wowed by this move. They may have actually given up too much in Rush and Jack, who's a decent pg in my opinion. IF Bayless does prove to be exactly what they needed, then it's a great move in that it may not matter if they initially gave up a little too much value for him.
  • I am NOT sold on the Clippers being winners last night, precisely because I'm not sold on Eric Gordon as an effective pro. Consensus seems to be that he just wouldn't cut it as a pg and he's small for the sg position. I won't just settle for the name Ben Gordon being thrown out as an example of a small scorer as if that makes everything okay. Even IF Eric turns out to be the pro scorer that Ben is, Ben still has his shortcomings and I'm skeptical about how well that type of situation would work with a backcourt as weak as the Clippers' is. Gordon was pretty much the player I was hoping the Clips would not draft.
  • I'm on board with what the Nets are doing (it doesn't hurt that Lopez and CDR fell into their laps). Throw in the cap space they've cleared, the Kidd-Harris swap, and the acquisition of Yi (who may still prove to be a valuable contributor) and they could be back on track fairly soon.
  • In my view, the T-Wolves are the winners with Memphis being less impressive right now. Minny scrapped Jaric's contract, picked up a proven shooter/scorer in Miller, and got a player in Love who could end up being just as valuable or more valuable than Mayo.  I tend to agree with the idea it was a weird move for Memphis, unless there's something we don't know.  Also, the guy Minny got at 31 is supposedly mid-lottery talent who didn't go in the first round because he's about to a sign a contract to stay in Europe for another x number of years.

Not that Rush was necessarily a better fit for them then Bayless, but he (Rush) shot 43.5% from 3PT over his college career. You said yourself they need a lights out shooter.

I'm really not familiar with NCAA basketball outside of the Pac-10, that's probably a big reason I like Bayless more than Rush.  I acctually liked the pick before the trade but the trade is a better move in my opinion than keeping Rush.  Jack is a decent PG but nothing really special.  He doesn't shoot very well, is a really streaky offensice player and on his best moments he's a good defender.  I get the impression that he was only really picked because he was a favorite of Paul Allen.

Honestly I would have liked to see Portland trade for an established player like Richard Jefferson to add some experience.  That's what the Blazers really need.

I don't buy that at all.  Portland has a good record against Utah the past couple of years, they're a team that an unexperienced Blazer team can already beat without Oden.  Minnesota is moving in the right direction but still need some pieces.  Portland can start 2 legit 7 footers (Oden and Aldridge), 2 legit outside shooters (Outlaw/Webster and Bayless/Fernandez) and an All-Star guard in Bradon Roy.  Other teams in the division may have bigger weapons to go to (Boozer, Deron Williams, Melo) but Portland has more weapons in their arsenal making them a more complete team.
