Mamba Versus The Big Three
6/5/08

Tonight we get to start what will hopefully be a reasonably entertaining NBA Finals. Kobe is looking to get his first ring minus Shaq while the Big Three - two of whom are getting up there in years - are looking for their first rings period.
I wont lie. I want to see Boston win this thing. That's primarily because I'm from Northern California and LA is a smog-ridden, superficial hellhole, but I don't want to get too nasty.
But I'm afraid for Boston, very afraid. Doc Rivers is up against Phil Jackson, a true coaching mastermind who has never lost an NBA Final. And simple logic tells you Jackson isn't suddenly going to lose to a coach as mediocre (read: bad) as Rivers is.
Now Boston's made it this far, so of course anything can happen. But I keep thinking back to what happened to Memphis in the NCAA Tournament. Their biggest problem was free throw shooting, and I said it would kill them in the end. As they cruised through the tournament, a buddy of mine kept telling me, "They don't have to hit free throws if they keep playing this well." And he was right, until the championship game. Then it all fell to pieces, and it was eerie to watch.
I'm afraid the same thing will happen to Boston. Rivers has hurt the Celtics during these playoffs - that Atlanta series never should have gone 7, nor the Cleveland series - but he hasn't killed them. Yet.
But I think that's exactly what's finally going to happen now.
Anyway, 61% of you are backing the Celtics to win Game 1, which is a surprisingly low number in my mind. But what am I talking about, I picked the Lakers.
Q it up here.
