NBA Free Agency dominoes is underway. Despite getting a top point guard he's always wanted, Elton Brand has agreed to a five-year, $82 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. Also leaving the Clippers, Corey Maggette will likely sign with the Golden State Warriors in the next day. Baron Davis, who made the first big free agency move in heading to the Clips, has to be wondering what's up. Los Angeles figured to be one of the teams that cashed in big this summer. It's conceivable they've taken a step back, if not several.
The Brand move is certainly the most perplexing. It appeared that he was merely opting out of his contract to re-sign with the Clippers, whom Donald Sterling and the entire organization wanted to continue building around now that he's healthy. He deserves some criticism for not remaining loyal, but it's hard to blame Elton for wanting a change of scenery, particularly moving to a team that is now assured of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Teaming with a much younger Andre Igoudala is much more appealing to me than a Boom Dizzle partnership.
Donald Sterling is going to get criticized for once again letting great players leave, but in this situation it's hardly his fault.
The good news for LA is that there's still time to save face, and in a very big way. Josh Smith is a superstar waiting to happen and available for the taking with a big offer. Playing under the Los Angeles lights is likely to intrigue him and could more than make up, at least in the entertainment department, for the losses of Maggette and Brand.
As for Maggette's move up the coast to Golden State, it's a perfect fit. Who knows how good the Warriors will be with Monta Ellis running the show now, but if I had to purchase season tickets for one team alone, that'd be a hard lineup to pass on.
