NBA: Is Eastern Conference Ready For A Championship?
The Eastern Conference has only won two championships since the Chicago Bulls 3-peat from '96-'98, and even in those years the West still dominated. Michael Jordan's departure has at times appeared to have permanently tilted the scale in the other direction.

The Western Conference still has an abundance of good teams, but in Detroit and Boston the de facto NBA finals will no longer be the West Championship.

Last night the Pistons looked more than capable of handling the league's current dynasty. Powered by Rasheed Wallace's 23 and 15, Detroit had a 20-point lead in the 4th quarter. The lack of locker room cancer Chris Webber has allowed the team's chemistry to return to form. You don't want to take too much from a game in early January, but this road win should at least signal to fans that the NBA finals might be worth watching.

Oh, and then there's the Boston Celtics. 29-4 should speak for itself, even if it's against weaker competition in the East. So long as the Big Three are healthy come June, it'll be hard to pick against the C's. They disposed of the Pistons last week by 16. We'll wait to see how Boston stacks up against the West's best later this month and in early February.

Until then, I'm leaning towards an Eastern Conference NBA champion. You?

Still don't get where the excitement is over about the East.  Take away the Celtics and its more pathetic than its ever been.  The only chance the East has of winning the title is with the C's and odds are that Doc Rivers is going to play the Big 3 until their legs fall off which should be right around May.

I disagree with that on 2 points; the Celtics aren't "playing their legs off", IMO. The minutes for both KG and Pierce are down, and Allen has been injured, which will(hopefully) help him be fresher come playoff time.  The Pistons also look good, but being only 3 deep(including Orlando) does not give the East the level of competition that the West has(7 teams over .600 as of yesterday).  I'll still expect the champ to come out of the West, until someone from the East can pull it off!!

You are right about the Celtics.  Rivers has lowered this minutes some, which hopefully for the good of the league he keeps up.  The NBA at this point almost needs these guys in the Finals.  I'm not sold on the Pistons and won't be unless they beat the Celtics in a best of 7.  Each of the past years they've had good records, but the Lakers could pull off 55 wins in the East too and they won't be winning any title.  The Magic seem to be cooling off quite a bit.  As good as Dwight Howard is, I think the way they're playing now is more idicitive of how good they really are.  They could beat anybody on any given night with all their shooters, but when those shots aren't falling its just Howard.  After that though every team is .500 or one game over .500.

Dwight Howard isn't going to be able to do it himself.  Rashard Lewis is worth his contract right now, but in a couple of years Orlando is going to regret that contract.  Not only that, but Orlando has no room to make any more moves.  They're stuck with this team, and unless one of these guys improves a ton, or somehow somebody great falls to them in the draft, I don't see them winning any.

Secret weapon for the 'Stons down the stretch: Rodney Stuckey. By the end of the year I think he'll be among the best rookies. He's going to be Dwyane Wade, good. Promise.
