NBA Power Rankings Against the Spread

NBA Gambling Power Rankings: Knicks, Grizzlies and T-Wolves are Covering Spreads

11/12/12 in NBA   |   GeorgeMon   |   159 respect

The NBA is entering its second full week of play, and while it is too early in the season to overreact about anything we have seen so far (unless you are a Lakers fan, of course), we still have plenty of information to begin ranking each team. So, since a traditional power ranking is a little too main-stream, let’s put on our best pair of ‘Dwyane Wade’ hipster glasses and rank a few teams according to their records against the spread (ATS).

Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks have played some inspired basketball as of late.

Top 10:

1) New York Knicks
Record: 4-0
ATS: 4-0

Not only have the Knicks been playing great without Amare Stoudamire, they’re also converging spreads. New York is a big market and on everyone’s radar, so don’t expect this trend to continue. The more they win the larger their lines will become.

2) Memphis Grizzles
Record: 5-1
ATS: 5-1

Many experts believed that the Grizzlies were due for a let down this season, but there has been no drop off from last year as they keep winning and covering spreads.

3) Minnesota Timberwolves
Record: 4-2
ATS: 5-1

Nobody is expecting much out of the T-Wolves without their star players Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio. Minnesota has been taking advantage of favorable lines, and it looks like the trend will continue.

4) New Orleans Hornets
Record: 3-2
ATS: 4-1

The Hornets have a deceptively good team and will continue to get, and cover, favorable lines all season. If you are looking for a gambling ‘sleeper’, look no further than the Hornets.

5) Los Angeles Clippers
Record: 5-2
ATS: 5-2

The Clippers are one of the best teams in the league but the odds maker’s lines really haven’t been adjusted enough yet reflect that. Expect the Clippers to keep covering, especially if they are an underdog.

6) Denver Nuggets
Record: 4-3
ATS: 5-2

The Nuggets have benefitted from an easy schedule to start the season—they have played Orlando, Detroit, Utah and Golden State. Expect Denver to not cover as many spreads over the next few weeks.

7) Philadelphia 76ers
Record: 4-2
ATS: 4-2

The 76ers are another very good team that slides under the radar. They will probably be gold when they play the big market teams as underdogs.

8) San Antonio Spurs
Record: 6-1
ATS: 4-2-1

The Spurs are always a great team to bet on because they usually take care of business and don’t fumble over lesser teams. But be warned, coach Pop will sit players from time to time so always check their lineup before you bet.

9) Oklahoma City Thunder
Record: 5-2
ATS: 4-2-1

OKC is doing fine without James Harden. The Thunder are a young team that have the 'legs' to play hard every night, so expect them to be one of the best ATS teams in the league.

10) Miami Heat
Record: 5-2
ATS: 4-3

The Miami Heat are probably heading for a 60 win season, but the trouble with betting them is that their lines are always inflated because odds makers know that the general public will bet them no matter the spread.

November 11, 2012; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant (24) and forward Pau Gasol (16) react in the second half against the Sacramento Kings at the Staples Center. Lakers won 103-90. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-US PRESSWIRE
The Lakers are one of the worst betting choices in the NBA right now.

Bottom 10:

21) Los Angeles Lakers
Record: 3-4
ATS: 3-4

The Lakers are a horrible team to bet on right now. Their lines are always inflated because they are a betting favorite of casual gamblers, but are in no position to be a huge favorite against any team right now.

22) Brooklyn Nets
Record:3-2
ATS: 2-3

Brooklyn is another high profile team with inflated lines. It might be best to stay away from them for now.

23) Charlotte Bobcats
Record: 2-3
ATS: 2-3

The Bobcats are not going to win many games this season, but they should have some decent value against the spread. Their lines will be so inflated the opposite way that they will probably be close to a .400 ATS team.

24) Toronto Raptors
Record: 1-5
ATS: 2-4

Last year the Raptors were .360 against the spread, so expect more of the same or worse this season.

25) Portland Trail Blazers
Record:2-4
ATS: 2-4

The Trail Blazers were almost a .500 against the spread team, this year they have gotten even worse, so expect a horrible season out of Portland.

26) Atlanta Hawks
Record: 2-3
ATS: 1-4

The Hawks may have gotten rid of Joe Johnson over the summer but they are better than a 1-4 ATS team. There should be more than a few opportunities to find value betting the Hawks over the next few weeks.

27) Phoenix Suns
Record: 3-4
ATS: 1-6

Things are going to get ugly in Phoenix—don't bet them unless you have to.

28) Sacramento Kings
Record: 2-5
ATS: 1-5-1

See Phoenix.

29) Chicago Bulls
Record: 4-2
ATS: 1-5

The Bulls are another team with inflated odds. Without Derrick Rose they will probably be a .500 team, but the odds makers are still giving them contender's lines. There is value in betting against the Bulls until the lines are adjusted.

30) Boston Celtics
Record: 3-3
ATS: 1-5

Boston looks old and out of sync. They are also a betting favorite over most of the teams that they play, so expect their ATS struggles to continue.
