The NBA rumor of the day is something that admittedly sounds pretty awesome, although probably somewhat unlikely. But let's discuss anyway. As you know, since Mike D'Antoni left for the New York Knicks, Steve Nash's numbers have come a bit back to earth. This year he's averaging just 13.5 points and 7.6 assists, his fewest in nine and six seasons, respectively. That's primarily because head coach Terry Porter has changed the run-and-gun Phoenix style to a more half-court oriented game that utilizes Shaq. There's nothing wrong with this necessarily, seeing as the Suns are winning so far (9-5), but this isn't exactly the style in which Nash flourishes.
So, while Nash is under contract for this year and next year, he is a free agent in 2010. That's the same year that LeBron and crew can become free agents as well.
Nash to the Knicks in 2010 is where we're going here, in case you couldn't tell.
And it's not as ridiculous as it seems. Nash has an off-season home in New York once, participates in Manhattan soccer leagues and he's interested in filmmaking. Plus, Nash has stated that he wants to play two more years once his contract with Phoenix ends.
Now, you're probably saying, why would anyone want a 36-year-old point guard who plays no defense? Well, the Knicks wouldn't need him to be the starter. He could come off the bench and would could likely be signed for very cheap.
Just think about this for a moment. If D'Antoni can stick around until 2010, the Knicks could assemble a roster that includes LeBron, Nash, and say Chris Bosh. That's ridiculous. And they play a fast-paced run-and-gun style. I tell you, I'd watch every damn game the Knicks played.
Also, don't tell me that the run-and-gun style doesn't work. The Suns came within a dirty ref of beating the San Antonio Spurs two years ago and would have won it had that not happened. Plus, it's well known around the NBA that guys would kill to play for D'Antoni. Guys like LeBron and Bosh would go bonkers under D'Antoni.
Of course, this all depends on a few things. That LeBron doesn't sign with his buddy Jay-Z and play for the soon-to-be Brooklyn Nets, that D'Antoni is still around in 2010, and that Nash can even play then.
But in theory, it would be one of the most exciting NBA teams ever assembled. I hope to hell it happens.
