Of course, I don't mean that as a complete surprise. Anyone who watched him play in college would know this, but I don't think many expected him to be the most impressive rookie during the NBA Summer League.
Here's your NBA Summer League 1st Team
Aaron Brooks – G, Houston Rockets
Al Thornton – F, Los Angeles Clippers
Craig Smith – F, Minnesota Timberwolves
Javaris Crittenton – G, Los Angeles Lakers
Jose Juan Barea – G, Dallas Mavericks
Kevin Durant – F, Seattle SuperSonics
Kyle Lowry – G, Memphis Grizzlies
Louis Williams – G, Philadelphia 76ers
Marco Belinelli – G, Golden State Warriors
Nate Robinson - G, New York Knicks (most outstanding player)
Rodney Stuckey – G, Detroit Pistons
Rudy Gay – F, Memphis Grizzlies
Randy Foye – G, Minnesota Timberwolves
Spencer Hawes – C, Sacramento Kings
Von Wafer – G, Denver Nuggets
This being the first year I've remotely acknowledged the Summer League, it will be more intriguing to examine any patterns between play here and how it translates. As far as the rookies are concerned, I was still the most impressed with Belinelli and Stuckey.
Here's another Aaron Brooks highlight. Yep, PG on the finishing end of an alley-oop. A sub 6'0 point guard.
Man...this makes me more and more happy that the Celtics traded their pick for Ray Allen.

While it may not be any consolation, you should be happy about the big baby pick. I only saw one of his games in vegas (I think he had 19 points, 14 boards and 6 blocks), but I think he had other good games too. When I saw him, he showed an ability to put the ball on the floor, hit the jumper, and post up (besides the rebounding and defensive presence).
After a lot of compaining about drafting Brooks on Draft night, Rockets fans are now singing his praises.
I am always careful about evaluating players from Summer League.
I seem to remember that Lebron wasn't that impressive.
The Rockets have had a few summer league All Stars who didn't do squat:
John Lucas III - Better numbers than Brooks last year.
Dan Langhi - This guy dominated summer league.
Kelvin Cato - Got a huge contract with the Rockets.
Im still pissed about the pick. Right now hes slated to be the most exciting 3rd string point guard who averages 5 minutes or less a night. That...and a summer league rookie of the month.

Yes. I'm kind of wishing the Rockets picked Big Baby over Carl Landry at #32. I guess time will tell.
- I only got to see Belinelli once (he didn't play on Saturday ). He had an off shooting night, but watching him miss was more fun than watching other players make (even if partially because of the buzz surrounding him).
- I was underwhelmed by Rudy Gay, particularly his jump shot.
- Pleased with Thornton; I don't know if I'm disappointed the Clips didn't take Crittenton, but perhaps he's less of a project than I thought. (I have to put the qualifier in there considering what was said about him going into the draft and the fact that it was summer league.)
- In the half-game that I saw Robinson play, he showed nice shooting and passing.
- Hawes may be too eager to shoot, not eager enough to do other things, but the kid has some nice moves / touch around the basket. He didn't seem to run the floor very well though.
- Even when Afflalo struggled shooting against the Lakers, I thought his jump shot looked good. I was surprised by his defensive struggles against Denver (a good scoring game for him), but he had a tough assignment in Von Wafer, one of the summer league's leading scorers.
- Yes, Brooks looked good. His combination of shooting and quickness is impressive.
- Just watching Nick Young play a little bit, it seems like his confidence may be shaky, like maybe he got down on himself too much for missed shots.
- I didn't see a lot of DJ Strawberry, but I'd like to think he can make a roster. The suns would be nice, but with Nash, Barbosa, and Banks already there it may have to be elsewhere (Clippers? ).
- I hope Jeff Green has a great career.
- I don't think he'll make a roster, but it was cool seeing Jerry Dupree play for GS. He played for my high school when I was there.
I liked the pick initially then the critics made me weezy of the pick. Thanks for the video I have gone back to my initial feelings of this guy. I like the pick!!!

After picking up Scola, Im not as bothered by it. I hope Adelman can develop young talent better than Van Gundy could.
