NBA Trade Rumor of the Day: Kevin Garnett to the Lakers Talks Heating Up

OK, I usually don't report on these things, but I just saw a serious-size rumored trade that would send Jermaine Oneal to Minnesota, Kevin Garnett to LA, and Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum to Indiana ...

The owners of the Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves have begun talks for a trade that would involve sending Kevin Garnett to the Lakers, league sources said Monday.

A multi-team trade discussion is underway involving the Lakers, Indiana, Minnesota and possibly a fourth team, with the Lakers getting Garnett and the Pacers getting Lamar Odom and teenage center Andrew Bynum from the Lakers. Another minor player will likely be added to make the deal work financially.
I don't know what good this does the Timberwolves, and more particularly the Pacers. There will definitely be more players and draft picks involved. Do you think this deal will go down? It sounds like these talks are more serious than before.

You think Kobe Bryant would call Jerry Buss an idiot again if he pulled this off?

Sounds intriguing, but I'm not sure how that works for anyone but the Lakers.

PLEASE HAPPEN!

How dumb would McHale have to be to want Jermaine O'Neal right now?  Minnesota needs to rebuild, by taking O'Neal they'd be stuck in win now mode, only with less talent.

I know that draft picks have to be included going back to Indiana somehow-- they badly want into the draft-- they also mention a possible 4th team, but I don't see that happening-- that's too many "hands in the cookie jar," so to say.

That trade would be awesome. Kobe and KG would be a great duo.

The trade would be great for the NBA. Unless you're a TWolves fan and/or hate the Lakers you'd have to want something like this to go down.

Go ahead and chalk up the Lakers versus Portland on Christmas Day if it were.

I'm not a big Lakers fan, I'd really like to see them trade Kobe and have to rebuild.

Yea but you are a Bulls fan and you know that the Bulls is one of the few places that the Lakers could/would send Kobe.

I personally don't want Kobe in Chicago. At least not at the expense of both Gordon and Deng. I just have a hard time seeing myself rooting for him.

As for the deal mentioned above, throw in Lamar Odom as well heading to Indiana. It's starting to make a little more sense if only because McHale has to get something for Garnett instead of just letting him go to FA after next season.

I'd wonder who's going to run the offense for LA. Walton may be capable, but I'm not sure if the Lakers invest enough confidence in him. Maybe he'd get more of a shot with Odom gone.

What does McHale care? He's due to get fired soon anyway.

Seriously though...I think the Celtics have a terrible habit of producing great players who are horrible GM's. At this rate, I'm looking for one of the current players to be the GM later on. Since they can't play worth a damn, I bet they'd make a great GM.

yeah thats why I dont wanna see KG goe there lol...no seriously Id like to have Kobe but not at the expense of blowing up the bulls team...although we could eventually put down the perception that Kobe is BETTER than MJ.

You do realize that if Kobe went to the Bulls, ESPN would unequivocally declare him THE next Jordan, right? They wouldn't even question it.

I would think a package of Gordon, Thomas, Hinrich, Brown's rights, and the 9 would be enough to appease the Lakers, plus the Bulls would still have Deng, Sefolosha, Nocioni, Duhon, Wallace, and of course Kobe.

By the way, supposedly the 4th team in the deal is the Celtics who would get O'Neal.  O'Neal and Pierce would be a pretty nice duo.

Yeah Pat I know they would and they have before Chicago would just make it easier for them to say every night lol. I think Kobe would still be Kobe in Chi town but he'll need a better team than he has in LA to win another ring. Right now Chicago has that but Im not sure if the Bulls acquired Kobe that there would be enough talent left around him to make that claim. I say the Bulls should make a different trade, one for a taller , more physical G or an inside scoring presence.

Yep, I agree 100% with your idea about the Celtics making great players that eventually suck as GMs....  and I betcha McHale will "scratch the backs" of Bird and Ainge like this trade in a heartbeat.

Didnt't see Kobe going to Chi Town anyway, but this kinda says what I was already thinking...

The funny thing is that I think Kobe still wants out of L.A. regardless of any trade.

That is what Ric Bucher said on Sportscenter at 5pm earlier tonight. He said that Kobe wants out of LA regardless of what the Lakers do.

I'm thinking (or maybe hoping) that hes leaking that out to keep the pressure on the Lakers to make sure that deal actually goes through.

You are quite the cynic aren't you. But I wouldn't put it past Kobe, I think he wants to win more than any other player in the league.

Jordan Farmarr showed a lot of potential when Phil jackson finally let him start instead of that loser Smush Parker. He looks like the future PG for the Lakers. Add Garnett to Kobe and the Lakers immediately become a factor in the west. It's definitely good for the NBA as a whole for the Lakers to be good because they always get huge ratings whether people root for or against them.

I believe Farmar can be solid, though I think Walton may be more ready to run an offense. I've actually felt like Odom's presence may have been stunting Luke's growth because of some of the overlap in their skills. I don't know if Luke really needed to learn a lot under someone else as much as he has needed more experience.

if the Lakers get HG they will become an instant title contender.  Kobe and KG are 2 of the top 10 players in the NBA.

You'd think that but what about Denver, AI and Melo, some could argue that those are two of the top 10 players in the league and yet no one considers them title contenders.

The lakers still wont be a better "team" than San Antonio or Phoenix or Dallas in the west if they make this deal. Sure they will be able to compete, but I'm not sure they get past any of the 3 teams I just named.

Allen Iverson is over the hill, his best days are behind him. He took a heavy beating over the years for a little guy.  Kobe is still in his prime and Garnett is still solid at age 33.

True but what about Stockton/Malone, Houston with T-Mac and Yao, Houton back in the mid 90's with Hakeem,Clyde, and Charles. I don't remember if Wilt played with any superstars but he didn't win too many titles.

Charles never won a title either. That Houston team won the first title before Clyde joined them. They had 2 rookies that were key back then, guys you still see playing. Robert Horry and Sam Casselle. They also had Vernon (mad max) Maxwell. Olajuwon was a treat to watch, the most athletic center I've ever seen play. Hard to believe that college team with Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon didn't win the NCAA, lost title game two years in a row. The infamous miracle play by Jim Valvano's NC State team stole their title.

I know I was giving examples of teams with Superstars that didn't win titles. Hakeem was my favorite player of the 90's, not named Jordan. I also think he is the thrid best center ever behind Kareem and Russell. I believe it was their first title run that he dominated David Robinson and then Patrick Ewing in back to back series. The Dream Shake is by far one of the top 5 moves ever in NBA history, it was unstoppable.

Looks like this deal has fallen through. Lakers now focusing on Pacers center Jermaine O'Neal. I would be just as happy to get him as I would be to get Garnett.
