NBA Triple Threat: Your (almost) daily roundup of last night's action in the Association:Loss #3 for Boston After falling behind midway through the fourth quarter, the Celtics rallied in an attempt to keep their perfect home record alive. When Ray Allen hit a three to tie it up with 18.9 to play, it looked like Boston would again rally for victory. However, Chauncey Billups drew a foul on Tony Allen with just 0.1 seconds left. Billups made the free throws, and the Pistons hand the Celtics their first home loss 87-85. Once we get video of the final play, we will post it.
Suns can't quite complete comeback Down 17 after the first, and down 14 with 7:10 to go, it didn't look like it was the Suns' night. They didn't give up though, coming back to down three late in the game. However, Steve Nash threw up an airball on the last play, despite being open (albeit not set), and Dallas hung on for a 108-105 victory. Dirk Nowitzki finished with 31 points, including the Mavs' final eight. This game will still do nothing to change either Nowitzki or Nash's "clutch" reputations.
Gay parades over Spurs The Grizzlies took it to the Spurs for three quarters, only to blow it in the fourth. San Antonio roared back from 16 points down to tie it with 2.4 seconds to go. However, Rudy Gay bailed out the Grizz with a buzzer-beater three to give Memphis an 88-85. Gay finished with 23 points, and is 19.5 points a game this season. Bill Simmons addressed this this week, and he's right. When was the last time someone with a rep of not being always into the game, like Gay when he was drafted, turn out to be the complete opposite after they got a taste of NBA millions? It's an interesting transformation, and worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.
Best Lines
- LeBron James, Cle: 32 pts, 12-21 FG, 8 rebs, 6 ast, 6 stl...Unfortunately for LeBron, the rest of his team didn't show up and the Cavs lost to the Knicks by 18.
- Caron Butler, Was: 29 pts, 11 rebs, 10 ast, 3 stl...Despite the triple double, the Wizards fell to the Bulls. Tonight was a good example of how basketball in a team game. Many of the best lines came from players on the losing side.
- Chris Paul, NO: 21 pts, 10-19 FG, 3 rebs, 15 ast, 4 ast...John Hollinger was right about two things: Chris Paul is having a helluva year, and he's better than Deron Williams.
- Shaq: I'm having a terrible year - It had to happen some time. All the years in the league and contact have taken it's toll.
- Smush Parker asking for NBAPA's help - The latest hilarious turn in the Smush Parker/valet story.
- FBS getting tired - One of the keys of past Spurs' years is the limiting of FBS's (and Duncan and Parker's) minutes to keep them fresh for the playoffs. With the other two injured, that luxury hasn't been available for FBS so far.
