NBA Triple Threat: West Race Finally Stabilizes
READ MORE:
NBA
NBA Triple Threat: Your (almost) daily roundup of last night's action in the Association:

Denver 114, Golden State 105 The Nuggets are now in the drivers seat for the last playoff spot in the West. With this win, they take a full game lead over the Warriors as well as the tiebreaker, meaning it is essentially a two game lead with just three to play. It didn't look like that would happen when Golden State took a 16 point lead in the first quarter. However, the Nuggets came flying back, scoring 19 straight in the second quarter and eventually going up as much as 17. The Warriors rallied best they could, but their hopes were dashed by an Iverson three with 2:06 to go. They put Denver back up by 11, and everyone knew that was the dagger.

Dallas 97, Utah 94 Just a few weeks ago, everyone left the Mavericks for dead. Now they're in the playoffs with this victory. Deron Williams tied it late with a banked three, only to see Dirk Nowitzki give the lead back to the Mavs with a three of his own with 0.9 seconds left. Dirk and Jason Terry took over late after Josh Howard left with a knee bruise. The duo combined for 25 of the Mavs' 30 fourth quarter points. It's hard to say what Dallas's playoff prospects look like, but at least they've proven they aren't completely heartless.

LA Lakers 106, LA Clippers 78 The Lakers move a half ahead of the Spurs for the #2 seed, and a game and a half behind the Hornets one night before their big showdown. The Clippers gave up on their season weeks ago.

Best Lines
  • Baron Davis, GS: 20 pts, 10 rebs, 11 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk...Others on the Q have said it, but it bears repeating. Baron Davis was healthy the entire year, but the Warriors will still likely miss the playoff. Who would have thunk that?
  • Allen Iverson, Den: 33 pts, 12-21 FG, 3 rebs, 9 ast, 3 stl
  • Dirk Nowitzki, Dal: 32 pts, 12-23 FG, 4-5 3PT, 2 rebs, 1 ast, 1 stl, 2 blk
Rumors du Jour
  • Riley again hints this is it for him - C'mon, Riley, it's time. This is becoming the Old Yeller of coaches.
  • Lithuania petitions for Big Z - Ilgauskas is one of 14 players who must be given permission to play in the Olympics due to insurance clauses in their contracts. Z wants to play, but the Cavs have balked so far.
  • Bynum reevaluated - How critical is Bynum to the Lakers' playoff hopes? Is it worth trying to get him back into shape and into the flow of things during tough playoff games?
Now it's your turn: share your thoughts on the on and off court action Thursday in the NBA.

How did we all get a poor quality votes? Does someone out there need a hug.

Unless we luck out and don't have to face the Spurs or Pistons, Bynum is everything to our playoff run.  Offensively with Pau, we're the best in the league and its not even close.  With the defense Bynum provides, we'd probably be over the top, but without it we're pushing our luck.

I'm shocked at this one.

Still not over. We need the Rockets to win at Denver and we need to go into Phoenix and win.

The rest should take care of itself.

Lmao...

"Offensively with Pau, we're the best in the league and it's not even close"

At best, Lakers are #3. Phoenix and Utah are 1 and 2

Don't take my word for it, its all in the numbers.  The Lakers offense with Pau is the best in the league, and its not even close.

I just worry about the Lakers on the defensive side. They have to get better on rotation and stopping penetration and don't get me started on the pick and roll defense. With that said I think they have a punchers chance of going far in the playoffs. I am hoping for at least winning one playoff round. They need to get that taste back.

Another thing I worry about is rushing Bynum back too soon. I don't think it is worth risking the potential that Bynum has started to scratch the surface of. I am not saying getting playoff experience would not be great for him, but is it worth a possible injury? The other reason I worry about with Bynum coming back is chemistry. The Lakers have found something, especially on offense. I know that Bynum even before the injury was not a major offensive option. Most of his points were on put backs and being open off his man having to help out on penetration. If Bynum does come back then I hope I am wrong about all my concerns.

However the guy who I think the Lakers may also miss come playoff time is Ariza.

No matter what, I do feel much better about the Lakers direction and the future of the club. I am not saying that I don't want a title this year, but I am tempering my optimism with my world class pessimism. No matter who you root for, the Western Conference Playoffs will be magnificent.

Speaking of entertaining, can we have the Nuggets and Warriors play each other every night?

Okay I have rambled enough and probably made little or no sense at all so I will stop.

LOL!

Yeah, it's all in the numbers! Both Phoenix and Utah are shooting 50% as a team. LA is 48%...

And, the blog you linked to assumes there is 100 possessions. Which isn't guaranteed.

You're missing the point.  Its the effectiveness of the offense.  The 100 possesions is what balances it out.  If it was 50,60,70,80,90 possesions the Lakers would still have the most effective offense.  I realize that people hate the Lakers, but its undeniable that the Lakers have the best offense in the NBA.  The only question is do we have enough defense.

You don't think its possible for the Nuggets to lose to the Rockets and Jazz?

Golden State doesn't have the guts?

What are you, freaking out of your mind?

I just lost what little respect I had for you as a sports fan. Nice comment up there.

One of the weakest teams mentally in the league?

I wasn't aware you had performed psychological evaluations of all the NBA teams and their players.

Perhaps you would be willing to disclose your results to me in exchange for some more of whatever you've been smoking.

They DO NOT have the best offense. If they did, their shooting percentages would show it. They are 3rd. Which is fact and not an assumption.

You do realize that shooting percentage doesn't show who has the best offense right?  There is no assumption that the Lakers have the best offense.  They do.  They score more points per possesion than any team in the league.  Thats the best offense.  End of debate.

It's based on 100 possessions in order to normalize the stats. It's to adjust for the fact that teams play at different paces and thus use a different amount of possessions per game. The Lakers rank 3rd for the season due to the time without Gasol. With him, however, they've been destroying everyone else.

My question to you is will a less than 100% Bynum gum up the works? If I recall correctly, he has yet to play with Gasol in the lineup. Can the Lakers afford to work Bynum back in during what's going to be a really tough playoffs from the start? I don't know, and honestly don't have the knowledge to answer the question.

I'm gonna laugh so hard if the Nuggets lose to the Jazz and the Rockets, as I am expecting.

The Warriors play the Clippers and grizzlies. If we can win in Phoenix this could be the steal of the century.

He very well could.  I think the reason why the offense is so effective right now is that 4 of the 5 starters are good to great passers and 4 of the 5 starters can hit the three.  The one starter that can't, Pau, can hit from 15 feet out.  When you can move the ball around that well and spread the court out that well, the points will come.  I guess Bynum could make that even more dangerous or ruin the flow.  Unfortunately the playoffs are not the time to find out.

Yeah, that last sentence would be my biggest concern.
