NBA Vegas Summer League Day 5 Results
Now, If Jason Thompson Can Just Do This A Couple Dozen Times When It Counts
7/16/08

The most curious selection on NBA Draft night was the Sacramento Kings 12th pick of Jason Thompson, a senior out of nowhere Rider. A 6-foot-11 center who competed in the esteemed MAAC was drafted a good twelve spots higher than any experts had predicted, and one of the Maloof brothers' biggest gambles yet.

In the Kings opening summer league game, Thompson led all players in... fouls. Tuesday night the big man delivered with a game-winning three point play in overtime against the Blazers. In total, Thompson scored 17 points and added 9 rebounds.

Bayless Is More I lauded Kevin Pritchard's draft night moves that included a trade to acquire Jared Bayless, whom I predict will be the best of this year's point guard crop. His first two Vegas games have only supported that claim. His 28 point debut on Monday was followed by 26 more points last night in a losing effort to the Sac-town Thompson's.

D.J. Augustin Show Continues He's still not big on that whole passing concept (0 assists), but the Texas point guard can sure as hell score you some points. Last night he went for 30 on 9-of-14 shooting. His effort was matched by Vegas League All-Timer Marco Belinelli.

Vegas Surprise is Coby Karl Getting past the reasonable distraction that is cancer, the best Lakers summer league player has been Karl. Averaging 16 points per game through three, George Karl's son will find himself a spot on an NBA roster this fall with good health hopefully ahead of him.

Lastly, if you missed this from Monday night, here's O.J. Mayo's 65-plus-foot buzzer-beater:
