NBA Vegas Summer League Update

There's More Than Just Mayo
7/14/08

O.J. Mayo has been the featured star of the NBA's Vegas Summer League, and rightfully so, but there have been other revelations. In fact, it's two picks we laughed at on draft night.

Charlotte Bobcats reached for D.J. Augustin at the No. 9 pick, so it's good to see he's more than capable of running the show against summer league level talent. The Texas point guard has scored 14 and 15 points in the first two games in Vegas, and has overall played very well in the brief stints that I've watched online and on NBAtv. The one aspect of his game that will always need to work is getting others involved -- just four assists so far, turning the ball over five times on Sunday. Still, Raymond Felton is going to have a lot of competition at the point this winter.

The other big rookie debut came from someone that still doesn't look physically NBA ready, but his game looked good. Drafting a duplicate of Brandan Wright, I mocked the Warriors selection of Anthony Randolph at No. 14. Nearly identical slender frames, and both left-handed. Wright didn't make much noise at all last summer, in fact he hardly played. Randolph on the other hand, made his presence known right, dropping 30 points in the Warriors debut.

Not a rookie, but last year's summer league sensation, Marco Belinelli made a return splash. The Italian sharp-shooter still looks great in this format, pouring in 25 Sunday, but who knows if that will translate this year. Hopefully, Nelson gives him more PT, because he sure is fun to watch on offense. Defense is another story, but that sort of molds well with the Warriors.

Several more teams start their summer action tonight, namely the Timberwolves and Kevin Love. We'll have more on that debut tomorrow morning.

Minnesota is going to wish that they held the Mayo when he ultimately ends up being Rookie of the Year.

That was an incredibly dumb trade by both team seeing how they traded away players they needed for players they didn't need, but I think the Grizzlies will come out looking better in that one.  Mayo's game just screams NBA All-Star.
