NBA suspends Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw for Game 5

Awful, awful decision.

Turns out, he is Big Shot Rob, as his cheap shot has taken out two of the most valuable players in the series. For his deed, Horry has been suspended 2 games. One I'm sure he'll happily serve.

If the NBA wants to interpret it's rules in black and white, then Tim Duncan needs to be suspended as well. That's the only conclusion I can come to.

From Pounding the Rock (Spurs Blog of all places) who has summed it up best:
The NBA is retarded.
What are your thoughts on the decision? Can Phoenix still pull of the series?

Terrible. The Spurs got handed the series for a cheap shot. Unbelievable.

The Spurs were not handed the series. The Suns lost contorl. I will admit that was a cheap shot by Horry. But Amare and Boris should have known. I mean come on it happens so much in the NBA. So dont say that Duncan should be different. The situation was so much different. There was no scuffle when Elson dunked it. Duncan was not running off the bench (to go and check in) that was the worst cover up story ever. So no the Spurs did not get haned the series the Suns gave it away.

Thank you David Stern for ruining the series. Tim Duncan and Bruce Bowen should also be suspended as well. I thought the rule book should apply for every team.

The rule book doesn't state you have to running off the bench to get suspended. Tim Duncan clearly left the bench and was on the court.

Well that is the series. Suns can't guard Duncan with Amare, no way they can guard him with out him. Spurs take Amare and Diaw-less game at Phoenix and win the series at home.

thats some big bull right there. robert horry needs to be suspended for the series, and tim duncan should be suspended along wit amare and boris. thats horrible news... and now, the suns are gonna have to win the hard way. and i have all the faith in the world that they will. thats absolutely unbelieveable!! I HATE ROBERT HORRY SO MUCH!!!

if you really think that the Suns can win 2 out of the next 3. Then that it faith but it just wont happen

Pathetic.  Stat and Diaw did not get involved and did not escalate the situation.  For all the Spurs fans who are being so smug and arrogant, I'd love to see how they'd react if this situation happened in reverse.

hey Rookie, that's probably the dumbest statement I've heard on Fan IQ and I've been around for a little while

Don't you think Spurs fans would be saying the same thing that the Suns were handed the series if Duncan was suspended?  It's not a matter of faith, it's reality.  The NBA has put the Suns at a huge disadvantage by suspending the 2 players that can try to guard Duncan.

I hope Phoenix pulls this out with their "B" team to not only shut up obnoxious Spurs fans but David Stern as well.

"Big Shot Rob" comes through again, this time not a shot from behind the arch, but a shot at Nash

You know the NBA is messed up when Charles Barkley is the voice of reason.

The reason Duncan didn't get a game was because the rule actually says that if the player is leaving the bench for a skirmish (something like that) then they shall be suspended for 1 game and fined $35,000. On another note, does anyone see this as perhaps becoming a new strategy, send in one of your 8th through 10th guys on the team to commit a hard foul/cheap shot like that near the opponents bench prompting the team that had the player get the shot jump up and come on the court? I know that sounds terrible but you never know. I created a poll for which to discuss that possibly becoming a strategy. http://www.faniq.com/poll_enter.php?poll_id=102278

WTF!?!?!    Seriously... WTF?  I don't get it.

If I hear or read another Spurs fan complain about the NBA always tries to screw them over because they are a small market team, or claim that their teams plays basketball the "right" way I will flip the h*$# out.  This is complete BS and a disgrace to basketball.  This is no better than thuggish hockey.  When the Suns put Tony Parker or Manu on his ass in Game 6 there better be no suspensions either.  I seriously can't believe this.

I don't see why not. Had there been a "skirmish," which is as grey as it gets, on the play that Duncan stood up on the court he would have moved towards the play ... and apparently suspended.

Altogether it's an awful rule when interpreted this way.

Oh yea I totally agree with you. But I read in that god awful Jemele Hill chat someone had quoted her the rule. "During an altercation, all players not participating in the game must remain in the immediate vicinity of their bench. Violators will be suspended, without pay, for a minimum of one game and fined up to $35,000" That is the rule verbatim. It still isn't clear but you could say that there was an "altercation" between Horry and Nash, sorta. And then when Duncan came on the court there was no "altercation"

I've seen national columnists (ie, not Suns fans) saying that the situation that Duncan reacted to was as much of an "altercation" as what happened at the end of the game.   Did anyone get a technical for fighting?  Did anyone throw a punch?  No, the only ejection was Horry's for the flagrant foul.   The fact that it's even become a subjective judgement as far as what was an altercation and what isn't shows how poorly this rule has been interpreted in this case.  The NBA and David Stern have failed in following both the spirit and the letter of the law in this case.

Someone on another message board I frequent had this to say about the situation:

If I'm the Suns I commission a hit on Duncan with Burke doing the honors.  Make it as blatant as possible.  Stand over him and taunt him.  Heck, I would let Burke whip "it" out and pee on duncan.  If it breaks a leg or ends a career so be it, this is the precedent stern has set: you can gain advantage from dirty play.  Even better if some of the spurs players leave the bench.
