After The Voters Get Done This Weekend, The Rankings Won't Know What Hit Them
by Pat
9/28/08

Some people will look at the results of games this weekend and say that the Top 25 is a mess. I respectfully disagree. While some people might get thrown for a loop by a so-called "upset", those are actually the games that bring clarity to the rankings. Before this week, Georgia was ranked above Alabama. You can be sure the voters won't make that mistake again. At least not anytime soon. So did that game make a little more work for the voters? Sure. But now the voters are smarter (or at least SHOULD be smarter) than they were last week, and will hopefully be able to more accurately set the rankings.

Anyway... here are my rankings, as well as why I put them there. I'll await your critique in the comments.

1: Oklahoma - The Sooners are 4-0, with a 37-point average margin of victory. They have a quality win against TCU, and another win over Cincinnati, who is a pretty good team as well. Sam Bradford is 2nd in the nation in QB rating and completion percentage, and his offensive line hasn't allowed him to be sacked at all. Their skill players are arguably the best in the nation, with guys like Bradford, DeMarco Murray, Juaquin Iglesias, Chris Brown, and others. The allow an average of only 13 points per game, and have never been losing at any point in this season.

2: Alabama - The Crimson Tide have improved exponentially under Nick Saban, and they've done it quickly. They also haven't been on the wrong end of the scoreboard yet this year, and their convincing win over Georgia proved that they're not just a flash in the pan. They've won their 5 games by an average of 24 points, and are also allowing only 13 points per game. John Parker Wilson has matured greatly in the past year, and they're averaging an incredible 237 yards per game on the ground.

3: LSU - LSU's win at Auburn is one of the better wins that any team could have, along with the aforementioned Alabama win at Georgia. They will have a chance to move up later in the season when they face Alabama, but they also have a few very tough games against Florida, Georgia, and starting on October 11, they will have 8 straight games without a week off, due to their September 6 game against Troy getting pushed back to November 15.

4: Missouri - The Tigers' win over a very good Illinois team to open the season started them off well. They allowed 42 points to the Fighting Illini, but since then, they've beaten their opponents by an average score of 53-14. Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin are arguably the best QB-WR tandem in the league, and their offense can score against anyone. Buffalo held them to the least points they've scored all year in their last game, and Mizzou still put up 42. Their offense looks unstoppable, and Nebraska is the next unlucky foe who will have to try to contain them.

5: Penn State - Here's another team whose only game that wasn't complete and utter domination was against Illinois. Despite merely a 38-24 win over Illinois, they win by an average score of 50-13. Joe Paterno was briefly tied with Bobby Bowden for most career wins, but he will definitely be up by 4-5 by the end of this season. This Penn State team is very good, and whoever is pulling the strings on the Joe Pa puppet is doing an excellent job.

6. Texas - They are 4-0, with 3 wins of the same exact score: 52-10. I'm anxious to see what happens on October 11, when they get their first legitimate test, at Oklahoma. Does Texas have black jerseys that they could wear for this one?
7. South Florida - They're beating the teams they're supposed to beat, and doing pretty well in the process. The Big East is weak this year, and if USF can avoid the typical trap game, they could be the conference's lone bright spot.
8. Brigham Young - 2 straight shutouts... 59-0 over UCLA and 44-0 over Wyoming. Max Hall is incredible, and this team has an ideal combination of talent, drive, and a favorable schedule. They could end up surprisingly high at the end of the season, once a few more top teams beat up on each other some more.
9. Texas Tech - They've done well, beating up on nobodies. They're offense is great, they can score in bunches, and they haven't allowed many points... yet. But their schedule has been a total joke so far. They can't go much higher than this until we see them against a quality opponent, which they'll see a few of, soon.
10. Auburn - They hung with LSU, and although their wins haven't been pretty (3-2 over Miss State, 14-12 over Tennessee), they are winning. They have a strong enough schedule that if they win out and LSU picks up a loss somewhere, they have a great chance to get to the National Championship game.
11. Georgia - Sure, they lose to Alabama. But Alabama looks like a VERY good team, and their wins over Arizona State and South Carolina were at least of decent quality. 4 of their next 6 games are against ranked opponents. That should tell us a lot more about this Georgia team, and we'll know whether they were a bit overrated, or if Alabama is just THAT good.
12. USC - Their loss to Oregon State was shocking... kinda. But it was as depressing as their win over Ohio State was impressive. It's doubtful that they can fully recover, and it looks like another Rose Bowl win for the Trojans, possibly resulting in a rematch with Ohio State.
13. Ohio State - Other than the USC game, they've looked alright. And clearly Beanie Wells is a big difference maker. But it's going to take a lot for me to put them above the Trojans
14. Utah - 5-0, but they might be giant-killer Oregon State's next victim on Thursday.
15. Florida - The loss to a mediocre Ole Miss team hurts. Not only does it hurt the Gators' ranking, it hurts Tim Tebow's chances for a Heisman repeat.
16. Wisconsin - The win at Fresno State was nice. But the collapse in Ann Arbor was simply inexcusable.
17. Kansas - If not for the loss against South Florida, this is a top 10 team, easily. If that were a home game, then they might be #7 right now. Either way, their games against Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas and Missouri will show us everything we need to know about this team... and it might not be all that good for them.
18. Boise State - They're intent on crashing the BCS party again... but do they have a strong enough schedule to make it? Maybe not. But by virtue of their Fiesta Bowl win last time, they'll be "grandfathered" in if they win out.
19. Vanderbilt - The SEC's most pleasant surprise will get a wake up call next week against Auburn.
20. Fresno State - Their lone loss was by 3 points to a very respectable Wisconsin team.
21. Oklahoma State - 3 straight games of 55 or more points. Mike Gundy is a man, he's 41. But his upcoming schedule is incredibly tough.
22. Illinois - 2 losses, but both to some of the best teams in the country. Can't fault them too much for that.
23. Connecticut - They're 5-0, but could easily be 2-3. But they're still 5-0. If they lose to UNC next week, look for Butch Davis and the Tar Heels to take over this spot.
24. Oregon - Next week, @USC. Everyone say goodbye to the Ducks in the top 25.
25. Maryland - No one knows what happened against Middle Tennessee, but the Terps are actually pretty good, and a win against Wake Forest in 3 weeks could all but wrap up the ACC's Atlantic division.

Got any gripes? Take a number, and I'll be with you shortly. Just kidding... tell us where you agree or disagree.
