NCAA Football Week 15: SEC Championship Florida vs Alabama And Other Early Games
Florida And Alabama In The National Championship Semi-Final, And Some Other Games [NCAA FB Early Live Thread]

It's Championship Weekend, and after Ball State blew their chance at perfection against Buffalo last night, Alabama will have a chance to maintain theirs today against Florida. The winner of this game will most likely get a chance to play for the National Championship. The loser will likely play in a different BCS bowl game.

There are a few other games early today, but none carry the importance of the Florida-Alabama game. At least not this year.

Here are the other games, for those of you who may be watching them.

12:00
Army at Navy (CBS)
#23 Pittsburgh at Connecticut (ESPN)
Conference USA Championship: East Carolina vs Tulsa (ESPN2)

1:00
ACC Championship: #17 Boston College vs #25 Virginia Tech (ABC)

3:00
Washington at California

4:00
SEC Championship:
#1 Alabama vs #4 Florida (CBS)

4:30
#5 USC at UCLA (ABC)

If you're watching any of the games, chat it up here, or on the respective game pages. Don't forget to make your picks on the weekly Pick 'Em page, and enjoy the games.

All I know is that I hope UCLA beats USC, Florida beats Bama, and Mizzou beat OU.  I'd love to watch the BCS try and figure that **** out.

Easy... Oregon State gets a Rose Bowl bid vs Penn State, Texas and Florida play for the National Championship, Utah will play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl goes to Cincy and the winner of BC/Va Tech, and then the Fiesta bowl will likely be Ohio State and Oklahoma.

Texas-Florida NC

Cincy, BC/VT winner, PSU, Missouri, Oregon State (I believe by tiebreaker) autobids

Utah and Alabama at large

Oklahoma/Texas Tech screwed by the 2 team per conference rule

USC or Ohio State get the other at large because they sell more tickets and get more tv viewers so Boise sits home too.

In that scenario Missouri has the autobid so Oklahoma is out. And a 2-loss USC likely knocks a 2-loss OSU out of the Fiesta because of that little head-to-head thing.
Which is why I'm rooting for USC to beat UCLA, because that would keep Ohio State in the Fiesta, likely against Texas.

Oh damn, that's true, I totally forgot about that.

Either way, the BCS isn't terribly hard to figure out.

You don't think USC would pay a bigger price if they lost to UCLA? That would be a pretty bad loss this late in the season, and it seems like the BCS would slaughter them for it.

If it weren't for the head-to-head, Ohio State would be an easy choice over them (and not beacuse I'm a fan). They are a big name, travel great, and the Fiesta Bowl is their second home, plus USC traditionally doesn't travel very well.
I guess the selection comittee might take OSU anyways if they don't think USC fans will spend as much money, but I'm sure people would complain.

Pat, only Alabama deserves to go to the National Title game, not Florida. Teaxas, Oklahoma,Penn St., USC, Texas Tech, and yes, Utah, should go over a team from the overrated SEC. This SO-CALLED national semi-final is ridiculous, because, on the field, Florida lost @home, the so called "swamp", trailing the whole 4th qtr. Somehow, the SEC teams always seem to slither, like the BCS snakes they are, just like 2-loss LSU last year.....GREAT...another joke of a day that is the BCS!

I know that is the direction that they WOULD go, but it would further tarnish the reputation of the BCS.  Texas did not even earn the right to play for their conference title, yet they get to play for a national title?  Florida would be the obvious choice as SEC champions, but I think that it becomes extremely complicated beyond that.  How would the BCS be apt to put either Texas or Texas Tech in the title game when neither played for their conference championship?  How could the BCS then ignore the likes of Utah, Boise St, or Penn St in determining who is most worth to compete for a national title?

In this scenario, I think that the arguement about strength of schedule should get thrown out of the window.  Because in this scenario, 3 rightful conference champions lose out to a team that didn't even earn the right to compete for their conference championship.

Umm, did you read what Pat's post was in response to? It was if Florida beats Bama..You think with Bama's crap schedule and 1 loss is warranted still for the NC game?

Yes, i understand that. My point is this "National Semifinal" terminology. Alabama isn't the point, my point is that the Gators don't belong in the game period. USC, TEXAS, TTECH,PENN ST. have just a place in the game , as does UNDEFEATED UTAH, over Flodida. The BCS is stupid becaues it's alawys going to give  any 1-loss SEC team a break, a forgiveness over any other 1-loss team in the COUNTRY, and that is UNFAIR. If Folrida wins and is allowed in the game, it is more proof that what the BCS really stands for is The SEC Chapionship Invitational, unless we at the BCS can figure out a way to just play anothe conference team....bottom line...give me a break, the BCS mess just continues on, and on, and on...

I'm not saying it's right... I'm just saying that's the way it is.

I agree with everything you're saying. There's absolutely no way to say that Florida is any better than any other 1-loss team in the country, except perhaps Ball State.

I understand the concept behind the BCS, and in some ways, it really is an incredible system for ranking teams. It really is. But it's not incredible enough to be the entire basis behind the championship.

There have been 10 BCS Title games (7 as bowls, 3 as the BCS NCG).  An SEC team has featured in four of those games.  The SEC team won each one by an average of two touchdowns.  The BCS sucks, but given precedent, the SEC shows up on the big stage.  Period.

Anyone else sick of this pregame show on CBS and how they are head over heals in love with Tebow and how the SEC has amazing defenses?

It never occurred to them that the SEC teams are terrible on offense except for Florida and I guess Alabama.

12/6/08

Alabama is far from great on offense.  They have a solid run game, but Parker Wilson is far from being considered a threat in the passing game.  They use the pass to divert away from the run, and Parker Wilson manages the game well enough to keep the run successful.  That's far from having a solid offense.

Hahahaha.

On a more serious note to your second sentence -- that's why I'd like to see a Big 12/SEC Challenge.  Even though I kiss the SEC's ass, I'm not delusional.  The Big 12 is just as good, albeit in a different way (as you pointed out, defense vs. offense).  I'd love to watch the two conferences clash.  Such a difference in playing styles.  Tell me that wouldn't be great for college football (and moreover, put that stupid ACC/Big Ten Challenge in NCAABB out of its misery, because ESPN would have to cancel its contract with the thing out of shame).

Yeah I'd love to see a Big12/SEC football challenge but as we all know, most SEC teams don't like to travel more than 50 miles to play a non conference game . I know there are a few bowl matchups between SEC and Big 12 teams so we will get a few of those this bowl season. The best will be when OU beat Alabama in the National Championship.

You take the hot with the cold when it comes to Wilson.  He incinerated Georgia.  Yet he looked like a high schooler against -- of all teams -- Kentucky, though UK's defense was, once upon a time, very good this season.  I'm interested to see how 'Bama stands up to Fla's speed outside the hash marks.

Even though we've seen two quick strikes, I still think this game will be decided with defense.  Meyer and Saban know how to make adjustments and they have the athletes to carry them out.  No way Jones gets loose like that again for the rest of this game.  'Bama will tackle more sure-handedly as the game progresses.

Bama has done a hell of a job taking neutralizing Florida's special teams thus far.  Florida is not being able to play field position football like they have grown accustomed to, and it will be interesting to see how they respond.

Actually, as a TT fan, I agree. Hence my comment on the "Should he go pro" thread. He has major talent, but is slow outta the pocket, has some hesitation issues, and he cannot be the "whole" team. He needs more seasoning and needs to be planted on his butt a few more times...

True, but if you look at the complete body of work, Texas' season was still better than Florida's, even if the Gators win this one. More quality wins, a MUCH better loss... it's really not even close. Florida will probably still get the nod, but it won't neecessarily be because they deserve it more.

If Florida, Texas, and OU all split the human vote, computers go with the Big 12 season dominance.

The crazy thing is it could all come down to the Cincinnati vs Hawaii game to see if Florida or Texas has the higher computer rating. Hawaii losing hurts Florida since they beat them and would help Texas since OU beat Cincinnati.

This question is mostly for Tom, but where is Alabama without Julio Jones?  Wilson only seems truly confident when he's throwing to Jones.

OUCH..LOL. Personally, I give CBS very little credibility, but as much as ya'll love to hate on Tebow, the kid has talent, has worked his butt off,and if you could look me in the eye and tell me he doesn't deserve the accolades he gets, I will call ya a liar..LOL
He isnt the be all, end all, and needs seasoning, but he IS an amazing talent!

Then again so is Colt...I would like to see the Heissman go to Tebow again just cos I like him and that's history, but I am wondering what the percentage of QB Heissman wins,( I am google challenged.lol) to other positions is..I think sometimes the QB's are concentrated on more because they are so much in the forefront, and that there are many other positions that need more consideration than they get.

True, but if you look at the complete body of work, Texas' season was still better than Florida's, even if the Gators win this one. More quality wins, a MUCH better loss... it's really not even close. Florida will probably still get the nod, but it won't neecessarily be because they deserve it more.
I disagree.  The fact that Florida wins their conference championship game makes them more deserving than Texas.  Not just because they might win the game, but with their record and ranking, winning the SEC title game makes them more deserving than the Longhorns.

Absolutely lost.  JP Wilson might manage a game well, but he isn't good enough to carry a team at all.  Having Jones has won 3 games this year, just on presence alone.

I think in a normal year that works, but Texas was just as deserving to be in the Big XII title game, but wasn't given the opportunity.

I have the USC-UCLA game on the second tv here and not paying too much attention to it, but both teams (the whole team) were on the field in a scuffle of sorts.

Question about that game...I thought that if USC had the red uni's, they would lose one timeout per half...right now, they still have 3. Did they change the ruling and I just missed it?

I won't argue that Tebow is a great player but the CBS guys just basically toss out the Big 12 QB's with the "Oh it is just the systems, blah, blah." tired argument that holds no water really. Tebow's numbers are no where near those of the Big 12 QB's and all 4 QB's (Bradford, Tebow, Harrell, and McCoy) have the exact same record.

Last year Tebow won the Hiesman because he had amazing numbers but not the wins, this season the CBS guys want him to get it not because he put up great numbers but beacuse "he gutted up and lead his team". I just don't like that they are trying to rationalize it towards their guy so blatently.

I don't have a concrete answer, but I think that it turned out that they only lost one timeout in the 1st half.  Also, the Pac 10 was asking for a waiver so maybe they got that.  I'm not sure though.

But Florida will still get the nod over Texas if they win.  Who deserves it more is another argument.  But the voters will put the Gators in the national title game.

It really depends on how close that human vote is between OU, Texas, and Florida. The closer it is, the great the odds that Texas goes instead of Florida since the computers accurately measured how weak the SEC was this season outside of Florida and Alabama.

That I can agree with.  i just wish the voters in the Harris and Coach's poll actually take some time and look at all the resumes.  They won't, but it'd be nice.

For those of you watching the 7:00 games and later, here's the Oklahoma-Missouri-Other late games Live Thread.

VY, the college player, was as good as they come.  I don't think I've seen a guy singlehandedly beat such a good team.

The only thing I heard tonight from the CBS guys that made sense was the fact that since everyone does love McCoy, Harrell and Bradford so much, those voting on the three most deserving will be split.

Then for those that are complete SEC-biased/Teboner lovers, they can sneak him in beating all three separate candidates.

And I can proudly say that his only loss as a starter at Texas was to.....Oklahoma!

Take that Vince Young!

Only for Tim Tebow would a simple slant be considered an amazing pass.

There are 6 (!) Big XII QBs who at the very least have had equal seasons to Tebow.  This Heisman consideration for him is a joke.

Well, I think I can say this now.

For all of the people (not necessarily on this thread) that said Alabama's season is a disappointment or a failure if they lose this game are idiots.  For a team with only 9 scholarship seniors and playing 14 freshmen, I'm pretty damn proud of this team.  They were only supposed to win 7 games this year, 8 if they were lucky.  I don't care if anyone says the SEC is down, 12-1 for this group is pretty damn good.

Congrats to the Gators.  I guess now we get ready for Utah or whoever gets invited to the Sugar Bowl.

Good Season Bama.  Ya did good, boys!

I think both of them are ready to give Florida the National Title today.

Lets not even worry about the Bowl games, just give them the crystal ball right now according to those two increasingly more annoying douches

No kidding.  I try not to hate Tim Tebow because he really is a wonderful human being, but these guys are making it a bit more difficult.

Also, to say that it would be a monumental mistake to not have Florida in the national championship is ridiculous. Assuming Oklahoma wins, the two most accomplished (BCS conference) teams in the nation would be the Sooners and Longhorns.

Lol. Saw about 20 of those commercials today watching football...whenever I did live in Atlanta, I could never complain about school/work of cooking for 14 hours in a day, then not able to stand the sight of cooking food, so I stop by a Pizza Hut or Papa Johns every week or so.

I usually don't have any extra pizza left over when I order a pizza for myself but I have like 4 or 5 slices of this Panmorous pizza left. I was eating it and got really full and looked down and saw more Pizza. Just crazy.
