And in other news... Illinois is starting to stake there claim as the doormat team in the Big Ten.  Not quite the consistency I was looking for from Ron Zook and company after going to a BCS game two years ago.

I thought from what I heard on College Gameday this morning, maybe I owed Gene Cizik an apology.  Maybe not.  Auburn looks awful.

Auburn is just another average team benefiing from the SEC hype machine.  Coming into today, they were no different than my Badgers - an undefeated team yet to truly prove themselves.  The Badgers can prove themselves today (although I'm not greatly optimistic) and the Tigers are proving themselves to be a fraud right now.

Mike, I have to disagree with you about Auburn.  Ole Miss benefited from the SEC hype machine, but Auburn got absolutely no respect.  They weren't even ranked until they were 5-0, and they haven't had too shabby of a schedule to start the season.  They were very underrated before this week.

With that being said, I don't know what's happening today, but they are getting their arses handed to them early.

I also think Wisconsin has been very underrated too.  Like I've said on other posts, we still have another week or 2 before I put any stock into the rankings.  They're extremely overrated right now.

It's too bad that the first rankings of the year don't come out at around November 1st.  If they have to continue with no playoff, at least that would keep schools from being overrated.

Auburn definitely didn't get the hype right away, but to me it was quite a joke that they enter the polls at #17, essentially getting the benefit of the doubt for being a SEC team.  I just can't buy Auburn and Ole Miss being top 20 teams and South Carolina being ranked at all when equally and in some cases more impressive teams like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Houston (who despite last week's loss has in my opinion the best resume of the 6 teams at this point) are unranked.  I don't think Wisconsin or Michigan are anything special but the disparity with how they're treated and Auburn, Ole Miss, and South Carolina are being treated really rubs me the wrong way.  Now granted, Iowa also went from unranked to jumping up all the way to #13 so its not like the Big Ten is always getting the shaft (and for the record, I thought that was a bit of a joke too), but it seems like the SEC is certainly getting the benefit of the doubt a lot this season.  In the past, that'd make sense.  However, this year its been hard to differentiate which conferences are the best.  Outside of 'Bama, Florida, and Texas there really aren't too many impressive teams and really Florida and Texas haven't shown what we've expected to see from them yet.  Sorry for rambling on.

Also, I agree with you on the polls and now that I see Houston is losing forget about that whole "Houston is getting screwed thing".

It's still to early to start thinking upsets, but a few games with some interesting scores around halftime:

Kansas only leads Iowa St by 1 just befor the half.

Kentucky leads South Carolina by 3 in the second.

Tennessee leads Georgia by 9, trying to get Lane Kiffin his first conference..

Mississippi State leads Houston by 3 just before the half.  What happened to Houston?

Minnesota/Purdue was a close game.  Now in the last 8 minutes Purdue has had a shanked punt for 7 yards, a fumble on the kickoff return, and a blocked FG, which all led to Minnesota TDs.

That Purdue guy is feeling some heat.  I guess a caller to his radio show said he wasn't qualified to move from I-AA to Division I.  He wasn't left much in terms of talent, so I feel bad for him.  What are you going to do without talent?  Good call.  Minnesota just put it on them.

Purdue just got a TD that was so pathetically easy it's not even funny.

Most of family still lives in Central Illinois and Ron Zook is taking a beating.  Even though I always thought he was a better recruiter than anything, I'm really surpised that they're not having a good year.

Ron Zook is a great recruiter. Just look what he did at Florida. Without Zook's recruiting the Gators would not have gotten Chris Leak and not won the championship in 2006. Ron will turn that program around and Illinois will be a team to contend with in the Big 10 very soon.

Yes some of the ratings are a joke but I dont think they are that far off. Auburn does not have a great team this year and Bama seems to be the cream of the crop in the SEC west. With that said if Auburn can beat Bama later this year than I think they will get the respect they deserve. Wisconson probably is under rated and should have a great rest of the season. I think Wisconson could very well win the Big Ten and go to the Rose Bowl.

No doubt Ron Zook is a great recruiter and I am ecstatic that he has been able to bring in talent to Illinois with speed and athleticism.  However, he's only been able to do that offensively and in a sport where you play with 1 ball, what's the point of having a rotation of 5 running backs, 6 wide receivers and 3 tight ends.  Besides, it may have been Zook's recruiting that brought the players to Florida but it was Urban Meyer's coaching that brought the Gators to the top.  I bet had Zook stayed there, Florida wouldnt have won any national championships

Yeah, really thought Illinois was poised to start becoming a power in the Big 10.

Juice Williams has regressed as a quarterback since his sophomore year.  Last year was bad, this year has been even worse, so much to the point where he was benched for today's game against Michigan State.  When you have the weapons that Illinois has, you have to have a quarterback who can get them the ball.  As much as I appreciate what Juice Williams has done as the face of the program for Illinois, he's just not the quarterback that this team needs to succeed.

As expected, the Bama/Ole Miss game is very physical so far.  Fun game to watch, but stressful.

OSU/Wisky is your typical Big Ten battle.  Both defenses have been good, OSU returns an interception for a touchdown to take a lead.  Wisky responds by picking off Pryor and then running a fake field goal on 4th down to tie the score 7-7

Bill Stull threw his 2nd INT of the season in the end zone.  UConn went all the way down the field only to have a sack and fumble recovered by Pitt.  3-0 and both teams have missed opportunities for big plays.

Houston's defense was exposed big time last week by UTEP.  Nice to see the Cougars respond with the win at State, though that loss to the Miners last week ended any chance the Cougars had at busting into the BCS

79-yard TD pass for UConn, 7-3 Huskies.

Too many blown oppurtunities by Pitt. First and goal again. Let's hope they can get a Touchdown this time.

Nope, FG again and they're letting UConn run right down their throats.  This game is as good as over.

TD Huskies, 21-6.  The way Pitt is playing, that's the nail in the coffin.

I'll tell you what, Greg McElroy doesn't look all that great for Bama so far.  A lot of it has to do with Ole Miss's defense, but it might be a blessing in disguise as long as Bama wins.  He has been a little too confident, IMO, so far this season.  He needs a humbling experience so he realizes that it isn't a cakewalk.

So far, these are two punishing defenses go at each other.

Wisky has twice as many yards as the Buckeyes do but the Buckeyes defense and special teams have accounted for 21 points.  OSU leads Wisky 28-13

That's how you get back in the game, UConn couldn't stop the run for the life of them, leads to a play action pass for a TD, 21-13.  Now Pitt has to stop the Huskies on this drive to have any chance of winning.

Dickerson wide open and Pitt scores, 2-point conversion is good, tie game at 21 a piece!  I've been known to be wrong before.

Nice job on the comeback. I hope they can finish. On a side note...how about Greg Lloyd's son playing for UConn.

2 3-and-outs in a row now for UConn, the momentum has clearly shifted in favor of Pitt.  The next score could be the winner.

I couldn't believe it when I heard that.  I'm only 24 and hearing Gregg Lloyd's son is in college is making me feel old, considering I grew up loving his dad on our defense.

Cedric McGhee's uncle is Michael Irvin?!  This game has more of a family affair than I ever knew.

Ole Miss's defense is outstanding.  If their offense would live up to the hype, they would be well deserving of their preseason ranking.  Their offense has struggled all season.

Great comeback for Pitt. That was a turning point game for their season, and I think they can springboard off this one and really push for the Big East crown

This is the first time I've actually had a chance to really watch Alabama play and I have to say, I'm convinced there as good as advertised.  They are pushing Ole Miss all over the field on both sides of the ball

My Badgers made way too many big mistakes today.  Can't do that against anyone let alone playing a good team on the road.  However, for the first time in a year I am convinced that maybe Bielema has this team going in the right direction.

I will say for the third week in a row..."THE ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS ARE FOR REAL!!!!!" I will promise you Houston Nutt is about as nervous as a whore in church on Sunday morning about right now. I predict the Razorbacks march into Oxford next week, like a squirrel looking for a Nutt, and have having Houston scratching his head thinking what would have been. If you think this year is starting to shape up more along the lines of traditional Razorback football, you just wait until next year when we get most of these guys back and with the experience of playing together. We have a natioanl contender on our hands in Arkansas land! And for all you doubters....stay tuned!!!!

I think Mallett is the Best qb in the SEC, maybe the best in the US. He is a potential #1 draft pick.Petrino can coach and recruit and the Hogs are the team to watch!!
