20 hours left to sign up for the FanIQ vs "Experts" Bracket Contest. Nintendo Wii for the Alright, here's the final region picks, also known as the UCLA's practice before the Final Four.
1 UCLA vs 16 Miss Valley St. (Thurs, 9:55) Let's put it this way, rather bluntly, Mississippi Valley State should've been in the play-in game but they have too many black students. The NCAA doesn't want to do that. The Delta Devils aren't good. They lost their first 8 games of the year before a reprieve known as Bellhaven College. Their first legit win didn't come until February 9th against Alabama State (yeah, NIT team!). This game will appear as though the varsity squad is scrimmaging against the 6th grade all-stars. Pick: Bruins 89-36
8 Brigham Young vs 9 Texas A&M (Thurs, 7:25) If both teams bring their best I'm confident in predicting the winner, the trouble is getting a consistent output from the Aggies. DeAndre Jordan and Joseph Jones should be able to dominate the post, even against a guy I think is quite good, Trent Plaisted. BYU is one of those teams were I apply the rely on three-point rule, which is to say I don't pick them very far. BYU's Lee Cummard might be the most underrated player in this region and he'll need to be hot from outside. Pick: Aggies 78-76
5 Drake vs 12 Western Kentucky (Fri, 2:30) I've gone so back and forth on this game so often I'm not even sure of who I picked anymore. Don't get me wrong, I think Drake is good and would very much like or them to go far. It's tough to even root against a guy like Adam Emmenecker, a 6'0 former walk-on turned league MVP, but the Hilltoppers are very tough. WKU should gain a significant advantage on the glass, so it'll all come down to how well Drake shoots. They can't be off and still scrap out a win. Player to watch: Leonard Houston. Dude can fly. I'm going to assure him a spot in One Shining Moment. Pick: Bulldogs 68-65
4 Connecticut vs 13 San Diego (Fri, 5:00) The bubble thieves are a nice story and I'm sure they'll have some exceptional talent on the baseline, but UConn and 7'3 Hasheem Thabeet would have to miss the flight. Toreros Brandon Johnson is very good and fun to watch in the WCC tourney, but I like A.J. Price's odds. Pick: 75-57
6 Purdue vs 11 Baylor (Thurs, 2:50) I like the Boilermakers very, very much to reach the Sweet 16 ... next year. Outstanding run through the Big Ten a year earlier than anyone could have predicted, but they're going up against an even better story. I'm going with Baylor's backcourt of Tweety Carter and Curtis Jerrells outplaying Purdue's. These game needs to be played at a frantic pace for Scott Drew. Pick: Bears 78-70
3 Xavier vs 14 Georgia (Thurs, 12:20) Still can't get over the Dawgs having to play in the very first game on the tournament. Xavier has a lot to prove, while Georgia has already proven everything. Too much depth for the Musketeers against a team that should be gassed. If you haven't watched XU, Josh Duncan and Stanley Burrell are deserving of all the hype and could carry them to the elite eight. Pick 81-73
7 West Virginia vs 10 Arizona (Thurs, 9:40) Tough game to pick for me, mostly because I think either can beat Duke with their A-game. Man, how many clichés did I just throw in this piece? Joe Alexander is quickly becoming my new favorite player and I've always felt you should ride any team that has a hot player going into the tournament. Pick: 'Eers 74-73 (buzzer beater)
2 Duke vs 15 Belmont (Thurs, 7:10) Name you need to know: Justin Hare. He seems like your classic 'Duke type,' except he's cool ... which is why he didn't go to play there. Before he goes to Med School, let's hope he carves up Greg Paulus for at least one half to keep us entertained. Pick: Sucks 82-55.
Rest of the Regional Picks:
UCLA over Texas A&M
Connecticut over Drake
Xavier over Baylor
Duke over West Virginia (reluctantly)
UCLA over UConn
Duke over Xavier (I hate myself)
UCLA over Duke
