NCAA Tournament Saturday Second Round Open Thread
9 more hours of hoops. What a shame.

What do you say we get the Duke Blue Devils out of this place so Coach K can get himself healthy.

I think you know which game I'm most looking forward to, but besides that the Wisconsin-Kansas State matchup really intrigues. The possibility of a Kansas-Kansas St. rematch is becoming stronger. It's not Africa, but maybe Michael Beasley would settle for trying to beat the Jayhawks in Detroit.

2 Duke vs 7 West Virginia (2:10)
3 Wisconsin vs 11 Kansas State (4:30)
3 Xavier vs 6 Purdue (4:40)
4 Washington State vs 5 Notre Dame (6:40)
3 Stanford vs 6 Marquette (6:45)
1 Kansas vs 8 UNLV (6:50)
4 Pittsburgh vs 5 Michigan State (9:10)
1 UCLA vs 9 Texas A&M (9:15)

Q it up here.

ah ha. Ed Hightower is reffing the game. I think you Big Ten fans know what that means.

"Right now we're seeing this game officiated very tight."

Big Ten officials at their finest. 8 minutes of basketball, 9 fouls called.

I've heard that Ed Hightower is just as bad as Ted Valentine. dook is probably going to win this with the officiating and having their three point game on.

I clearly could be biased but Michigan State lost 8 games this year. Ed Hightower officiated in 4 of those.

So, WVU has multiple players in foul trouble, while Duke only has one. Shocking. Luckily, Joe Alexander is a beast.

At this point, the refs are the only thing keeping Duke in this game.  They'll be shooting free throws on every foul for the last 12+ minutes of the game

16 straight 3 point attempts missed after starting the game 2 of 3.  You live by the 3, you die by the 3.

I'm more amused that everyone was praising Duke's poise and experience and yet there two seniors have been MIA for the most part of these 2 games.  In fact, this might be two of the worse games I've seen from DeMarcus Nelson

Rim found to be crooked, reason for dook missing threes.

I am browsing a dook board and they are melting down. People are calling out Coach K to retire, begging for a recruit who can post up, mostly attacking coach K.

I love it, I really do.

I hate those kind of fans that after a loss think that one of the greatest coaches ever should retire or be fired. I heard that stuff after the Fiesta Bowl from OU fans as we walked out of the Stadium and it drove me nuts.

3/22/08

The critics will say, Duke was a team that has no inside game and they shoot a lot of threes. They didn't hit their threes and they lost.

The only bad thing about this is that UCLA is going to have an even easier time to return back to the Final Four. I thought the best team that had a chance to beat UCLA was dook in their region.

As much as it's against my beliefs to openly root for a Big Ten team other then Illinois, I have to give Bo Ryan props.  He doesnt necessarily get the "stud" recruits but he does find and get the kids who fit his system perfectly.  It might not be pretty basketball but it's effective and Wisconsin under Ryan never seems to have a down or rebuilding year.

Anybody else watching the Stanford game?  I swear Jay Bilas has said "Robin Lopez has really improved his offensive game" over 7 times in the first 12 minutes.  And followed up every one of those comments with the same "and he is REALLY being aggressive offensively today!"  It was like a broken record mic-check, mic-check, mic-check, and were barely 1/4 through the game.  How is he not aware of this?

Kansas is a very efficient team. Even though they are having trouble finding a lane or a shot, they are still shooting near 60% from the field. On the other end, only Wink Adams can make any kind of play.

I have also come to the conclusion that Rush is overrated.

He is very good when he shows up to play which isn't as often as you would think for a great player. Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur are the best players on that team.

I have them winning it all -- and I will be worried if its this type of score with 5 minutes to go -- way to much time still left.

I was looking at the first few pages on these leaderboards, where the only teams that come out of the West Region is either UCLA, Duke, or Purdue...so if we're ALL wrong, it can't be that bad.

Being in Big 12 country, I have seen a lot of Jordan and he is raw. He needs to stay in school another year instead of being thrown right in there at Minnesota, that would be bad if he was taken by them only because he is still a project.

Me too. He has always seemed like an obese, talented, kid who knows his way around a basketball. By obese I mean there is a reason why Howland calls a timeout every five minutes and no way would he last a whole NBA season, or even a college season in a more up-tempo offense.

One final thing from the Mich. St./Pitt game.  I constantly had to hear how these Big East teams, especially Pitt, would have trouble in the tourney because the games would be called closer by the refs.  I watched this whole game and for the most part, the refs swallowed the whistle and let the guys play.  Maybe these Big East teams aren't as "physical" as they want everybody to believe.

Thoughts?

UCLA rarely shows respect to their opponents. I am fine with that dunk, but earlier in the season they were up big and two of their players scored late baskets when they could have easily ran out the clock.

Congrats to UCLA, their rest of the path is easy to the Final Four.

I've always thought; with 9 seconds left, right after that ball was scored by Collison, you just run as fast as you can to get across the halfcourt line, and set up a play with 5 seconds and not a need to run the extra 50 feet..

Were you the one that pointed that strategy out yesterday, or the day before?

The percentages of getting a good shot from half court are much higher than when you have to travel the whole floor. I like it.

Not to toot the Spartans horn, but Pittsburgh was pretty damn tough. I'd like to think they ran into a team that prides itself on being tougher. Even thought Wisconsin won the Big Ten, I'd say Pitt was a "tougher" team. Whatever that means.

Michigan State is a better tourney team because refs swallow their whistle in the tournament and just let players play. I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not to the Spartans, but I sure enjoy it.

I wasn't a fan of that late dunk at all ... but then I thought back to the Texas A&M highlights when they won at Baylor and throw down an unnecessary last second dunk and immediately wished that UCLA had thrown an alley-oop or thereabouts. What goes around comes around.

I agree with you...I think you may have read too far into what I was saying.  I'm saying that Michigan State was the better team and the Big Ten - as a conference - is often overlooked.

The point I was trying to make was that if you had said the refs were going to "swallow their whistles" prior to this game, everybody would have been talking about how that would play right into Pitt's hands.

I agree. I would have said Pittsburgh as well. Then again (I'll keep this short, as it could be lengthy) whenever the refs in the Big Ten got happy whistles -- so 9 times out of 10, see: Duke-WVU game -- Michigan State loses.

It's a simple formula as far as I've seen. I hate to give the officials too much credit in deciding an outcome, but Michigan State is one of the teams that benefits greatly by the way tournament games are called.
