The Seattle Seahawks are the best betting team in the NFL.

ATS records may be one of the most important parts of handicapping a football game. Most bettors might look at a team’s straight-up record and assume that the best teams in the league are also the teams that cover the most spreads. But the cold-hard-facts are that the best NFL teams are not necessarily the teams with the best ATS records. The Denver Broncos could go 14-2 this season but if they do not cover the majority of their spreads than does it really matter to gamblers?  Watching football games on a Sunday afternoon is great, but gamblers only gamble to make money.

Let’s take a closer look at the best and worst ATS records and see which NFL teams are really making money for bettors and which are not.

The Best

Seattle Seahawks: 4-0
Tennessee Titans: 3-0-1
San Diego Chargers: 3-0-1
New York Jets: 3-1
Oakland Raiders: 3-1
Buffalo Bills: 3-1

Outside of the Seattle Seahawks the best ATS teams in the league are the middle-of-the-road teams that no one expects to be contenders come playoff time. The Titans, Chargers, Jets, Raiders and Bills are not projected to be playoff teams and a 9-7 record is probably the best that any of them can hope for. But these teams are a prime example why ATS records are so important for bettors. At first glance no one in their right mind should be betting on the Raiders or the Jets, but they are two of the teams with the most value.

The Worst

Jacksonville Jaguars: 0-4
Houston Texans: 0-4
Pittsburgh Steelers: 0-4
St. Louis Rams: 0-4
New York Giants: 0-4
Philadelphia Eagles: 1-3

The only real surprise here is that the Houston Texans are 0-4 against the spread. Houston is one of the better teams in the league and is expected to be a playoff team at minimum and could even be a Super Bowl contender in the AFC. The rest of the teams on the worst list are the usual suspects of bad teams. The Jaguars might go seven or eight games before they cover a spread and are so bad that they might not win a game all season. The Eagles have a high-flying offense and will probably continue to be over-valued by the sportsbooks all season and will remain one of the worst ATS teams in the league.
