We're only three weeks into the NFL season and there's already plenty of coaches on the hotseat. Regardless of what type of talent a general manager provides a head coach, it's win for me now or see you later. Here's how we see the race to become the first fired coach this season stacking up:
Just A Matter Of When
1. Lane Kiffin, Raiders
Almost assuredly going to be the first fired coach, and we're stunned it hasn't happened already. Kiffin's a good coach, and could very well be great at the college level, but Al Davis blew this hiring and now he's blowing the firing. News leaked last week that the 33-year-old coach would be fired if the Raiders didn't beat the Chiefs on Sunday. Surprisingly, the silver and black went into Kansas City and ran over the Chiefs by two touchdowns. We can't be too sure what Davis is thinking, but for Kiffin's sake, hopefully the Raiders lose this week and he can get on with his coaching career. Speaking of which, how about Syracuse? Kiffin's a college guy and his energy and offensive game planning experience at USC could be a great boost to a struggling program that should be competing in the Big East.
2. Scott Linehan, Rams
Before last week it was a near lock that Kiffin would be the first NFL coach fired. Then Linehan blew up at the post-beatdown press conference, indicating he's not far behind the Raiders coach. St. Louis has scored 16 points in two weeks (worst in the NFL), while allowing 79 (2nd worst). Steven Jackson's hold out was bad luck, but the Rams haven't shown any promise under his reign. Very little chance he makes it past this season.
Wouldn't Surprise Me
3. Marvin Lewis, Bengals
I desperately want to like Lewis, but he's made far too many mistakes in Cincinnati and the Bengals pathetic play is all on him. Lewis talks a good game, always demanding high character, but his actions haven't followed suit. He'll be the head coach all season, but an offseason move is looking more and more likely.
4. Mike Nolan, 49ers
I like Nolan a great deal and don't think he deserves to be fired this offseason, but considering he was on the verge of losing his job last year, it's inevitable if San Fransisco can't reach 7 or more wins. In the
Safe, But Getting Warmer
5. Norv Turner, Chargers
Granted the loss last Sunday wasn't all on him, but his complaining was a little embarrassing, seeing as how the Chargers had numerous other opportunities to overcome Ed Hochuli's gaffe. If San Diego fails to make the playoffs, I have a hard time believing the front office will continue with an average head coach who's better off as an OC.
6. Romeo Crennel, Browns
QB controversies are a head coach's nightmare. Stunningly, Browns fans are pleading for Brady Quinn and if the team keeps playing as poor as it has the first two weeks, it's only a matter of time before Crennel takes all the heat. It's hard to see now, but the Browns are getting closer and I hope he's given some time.
7. Rod Marinelli, Lions
Don't laugh (OK, fine), but I think Marinelli is a good coach. But with Matt Millen in charge, the Lions will always fail and the GM will continue to find scapegoat after scapegoat.
Do you think anyone besides Kiffin and Linehan is fired this season?
