Every second, we are getting closer to the start of the NFL season. (Hooray!) This week, we will look at each division, and see the best and worst the NFL has to offer. We will also see what FanIQ thinks will happen in each division.
Today we look at the AFC East, a division that had two playoff teams last year. The Patriots won the division with 12 wins, while the Jets got a wild card with 10 wins. The Bills fell short of .500 with 7 wins, and the Dolphins were last with 6 wins.
Schedule: AFC North, NFC East
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins biggest problem offensively is their line. None of the linemen on that line are better than average, and that will be a problem for them all year. They've got alright receivers, a good running back, but Trent Green can only do so much without blocking. If he's forced to run, he won't be successful. They still have Jason Taylor, who is a beast, and overall a solid defensive line. They also have a very good group of linebackers, but their secondary is terrible. They've got really weak safeties, and even worse cornerbacks. Combined with a tough schedule, I think this ends up being a tough year for the Dolphins, and you agree with me.
My Prediction: 5-11
FanIQ Says: 6-10
Buffalo Bills
Buffalo's offense has a lot of concerns. They have a mediocre offensive line. Even with the addition of Derrick Dockery, they still have little around him. They are relying on a rookie at running back, and who knows if he's ready to be the guy. Although I think Losman is solid, and Evans is a beast, they lack any other receiving options, and all teams will have to do is double Evans every play to shut this offense down. Schobel is great, but the rest of the defensive line is average. They have a lot of problems at linebacker, and an average at best secondary. They have a brutal schedule (Jacksonville and Denver as the uncommons!) and I really think they will struggle this year. You think they'll do a bit better than I do but not much.
My Prediction: 4-12
FanIQ Says: 5-11
New York Jets
The Jets were a young team that had a lot of success last year. They've got a solid line that continues to get better as Mangold and Da Brick improve. They've got solid receivers, a fairly good QB, and an improved running game with the addition of Thomas Jones. The Jets defensive line is solid for the 3-4 defense, and they have solid group of linebackers as well. They have a very good group of safeties, and a pretty good group of corners. I think the Jets are right in the running for the wild card, and you do as well.
My Prediction: 11-5
FanIQ Says: 11-5
New England Patriots
The Patriots have one of the best offensive lines in football. They have a great quarterback and a pretty good young running back in Maroney. They have a great tight end, and a solid group of receivers, provided that Moss doesn't destroy their team chemistry. They have a very strong 3-4 defensive line, and with the addition of Adalius Thomas, one of the best linebacker groups in the NFL. The biggest concern is their secondary. Samuel is great, but he's holding out right now, and they don't have much else at corner after him. Wilson isn't a bad safety, and Harrison is still good when healthy, but he's never healthy. They are definitely hoping Meriweather can come in and be great. Overall, New England may be the best team in the NFL, and I think they win a lot, and you agree.
My Prediction: 14-2
FanIQ Says: 14-2
