NFL Draft 1st Round Results and Reactions: Void of Wide Receiver
Kudos to the NFL for the new 10 minute limit on selections. This first day flew by. Past drafts have been a challenge to stick with for 10 hours, this was a crisp six hour first day.

Here are the 1st round results and my brief analysis. Look forward to your opinions below.

1. Miami - OT Jake Long, Michigan
When you're a franchise near the bottom looking to rebuild, starting out with an offensive left tackle is the best place to go. No complaints here. Based on their second round picks, this selection looks even better.

2. St. Louis - DE Chris Long, Virginia
Hard to argue with selecting someone of this pedigree. I have little doubt he'll be a solid player and definitely not a bust. Hall of Fame ceiling? Not sure.

3. Atlanta - QB Matt Ryan, Boston College
I thought Steve Young made the best point - the Falcons needed to draft a QB to eliminate any questions as to whose franchise this is when Vick gets out of jail. Ryan is better than any QB coming out next year, so this was smart.

4. Oakland - RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas
You knew Al Davis would go with the shiny object, and it's hard to argue. Maybe the comparison isn't 100% accurate, but McFadden could have the same impact as Adrian Peterson ... if he was running behind the same line. The talent is there, but expect to be disappointed with his production with JaMarcus Russell hardly a passing threat yet. Future looks good, though.

5. Kansas City - DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU
Best player on the board, and they still got their offensive lineman many "experts" had pegged for them in this spot, later on in the draft. Great value.

6. New York Jets - DE Vernon Gholston, Ohio State
I don't think he'll be a bust, so that's a positive. Concerned he's just a physical freak, but Ohio State guys have proven themselves well in the pros. Safe, solid pick for New York. I expect he'll meet Tom Brady early and often.

7. New Orleans - DT Sedrick Ellis, USC
Good work by NO to get their DT. The Saints wanted Glenn Dorsey at #2, but this was potentially equal value pick five spots lower.

8. Jacksonville - DE Derrick Harvey, Florida
Reach. These are the type of bold picks that get GM's fired ... or employed for life.

9. Cincinnati - LB Keith Rivers, USC
Best LB available, and now, the best linebacker on the Bengals. Thought they'd blow the obvious pick.

10. New England - LB Jerod Mayo, Tennessee
When it comes to the Patriots, they've earned the respect in drafts to just assume this pick will work out. Still, seems like Mayo would have been available 5-10 picks later. I like the pick, regardless, they needed some youth in the linebacking core.

11. Buffalo - CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy
Devin Thomas was going to be a reach. As long as McKelvin is up for the task of punching Randy Moss in the face, this will work.

12. Denver - OT Ryan Clady, Boise State
The most fleet of foot offensive lineman in the draft, so naturally, that fits perfectly with the Broncos' scheme. I bet if you asked Shanahan where Clady was on his entire board and he'd have said 4th or 5th.

13. Carolina - RB Jonathan Stewart, Oregon
OK? Why? I like Stewart, I do, but not more than Rashard Mendenhall. They also had bigger needs on both lines. They saved themselves with the later pick, but I thought this was a reach, especially with the bumps and bruises this Duck has taken.

14. Chicago - OT Chris Williams, Vanderbilt
Much, much needed. Thrilled with this pick. Will make Rex Grossman fumble a few less times. Still won't help throws arrive on target or inept wide receivers catch tough throws, but this was the best case scenario as far as this Bears fan is concerned.

15. Kansas City - OT/G Branden Albert, Virginia
The Chiefs were pegged for Albert at No. 5 in many mock drafts, so I'm sure they're thrilled with this pick. Hasn't played a lot of OT, but he's a top lineman and that's what KC needed.

16. Arizona - DB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
The small school factor doesn't bother me at all. Might not help this season immediately in the defensive backfield, but he'll run a kick back or two.

17. Detroit - OT Gosder Cherilus, Boston College
Traded down two spots for this? OK, fine. At least it's not a wide receiver. Baby steps with Mr. Millen. Baby steps. I rarely argue with an offensive lineman selection.

18. Baltimore - QB Joe Flacco, Delaware
Interesting to hear your thoughts. I love the pick. Considering they abused the Jaguars on that No. 8 pick, trading up to this pick made sense. Granted, they could have waited ... but if you feel strongly in a guy, why wait? I'm just a blogger in my parents' basement, but I think he'll be a stud. Couple pro bowls down the line, and overall a very solid NFL quarterback.

19. Carolina - OT Jeff Otah, Pittsburgh
OK, Panthers, this worked out fine. OT was much needed ... probably could have gotten a better one at 13.

20. Tampa Bay - DB Aqib Talib, Kansas
If not for admitting he smoked a little weed here and there, worthy of a Top 12 pick. Steal, as far as I'm concerned. Best corner in the draft.

21. Atlanta - OT Sam Baker, USC
Interesting. Figure he would have been available where they were already going to pick next, but when you selected a franchise QB, might as well get him some health insurance.

22. Dallas - RB Felix Jones, Arkansas
Mendenhall is better, but Jones will be a good running back. You knew Jerry Jones wasn't going to pass on his alma mater.

23. Pittsburgh - RB Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois
Your offensive Rookie of the Year.

24. Tennessee - RB Chris Johnson, East Carolina
Worst pick of the draft thus far. I know he's fast, but you drafted his duplicate last year in Chris Henry. Speed is great and all, but this isn't college football. Everyone is fast. Titans bombed the first day of the NFL Draft.

25. Dallas - CB Mike Jenkins, South Florida
Solid day for the Cowboys. Needed a defensive back. Got one of the best. Could have used another running back, and got one of the best.

26. Houston - OT Duane Brown, Virginia Tech
As I said above, I'll never criticize an offensive line selection, but this seemed like a reach. Doubtful it will be a bust, however.

27. San Diego - CB Antoine Cason, Arizona
Addressed their biggest need.

28. Seattle - DE Lawrence Jackson, USC
Arguably the best player available. Good defense, now even better.

29. San Francisco - DT Kentwan Balmer, North Carolina
Building a great defense in the Bay ... not so much on the other side of the ball.

30. New York Jets - TE Dustin Keller, Purdue
I like Keller, but I can't help but acknowledge the Jets previous tight end busts. I'd have rather they selected the guy their rivals took right here ...

31. New York Giants - S Kenny Phillips, Miami (FL)
Perfect.

Now, granted I haven't seen Flacco play at all, but these guys that people draft because "they have a great arm" always concern me. I remember watching Kyle Boller for 4 years at UC-Berkeley. He was horrible for 3 of those years, finally had a very good senior year. Both my friend - who went to UC Berkeley - and myself, said this guy will be an instant bust when he's drafted.

But at the combine, he threw footballs through the uprights from the 50-yard line - from his knees. Everyone went nuts: "Oh my God this guy's arm is unbelievable!" But if you'd seen him play for 4 years, you knew he wasn't very accurate at all. Regardless, he shot up draft boards.

It seems to happen so many times that a guy wows scouts with his arm and he shoots up the board. But in all honesty, what good is a ridiculously strong arm if he can't throw the 10-yard out well?

There are only rare occasions when you need a guy to throw a pass 65-yards, like at the end of the half or a Hail Mary at the end of a game. And you NEVER need a guy to throw a ball from his knees through the uprights from the 50-yard line in a game.

The most important thing for any QB, is this: Is he a good decision maker? It's even more important than whether or not he throws a good, catchable ball. You can throw a good, catchable ball - but if your decision making sucks, you'll throw a good, catchable ball to a cornerback.

So in my mind, if we're just basing Flacco's status in the draft on his arm, then we really have no clue what the Ravens are getting. He may be a Kyle Boller clone, or he may be great.

The real questions are: Can he throw the passes that need to be thrown in the NFL accurately? And is he good decision maker?

Once again Matt Millen screws up and makes a huge reach in the first round ala (Mike Williams) how many more years of this crap do us starving Lions fans have to put up with it????

Other than Mendenhall, I agree for the most part with you CF.  Great draft day, I think they should bring round 3 back to day 1, that went by so fast.

Dumbest picks of the first round goes to the Jaguars and Titans  8th pick for Harvey?  Really?  At that price, you might as well have traded for Gholston.  And a running back Tennessee?? Dumb.

Best picks: Jake Long, the Chiefs impressed me with their two selections.  San Fran made a good choice, and I like Ryan Clady by the Broncos.  I thought Dallas could've picked their guys in a different order, not trading up for Jones, but overall they got who they needed.

Not sure yet: Trading up for Flacco.  I don't think they needed to move up to ensure they got him.  They still have to fix the rest of that offense first before any QB has success, it's not all Boller's fault that O has been bad.  Plus, Mendenhall to the Steelers.  They already have good running backs, and they need O-line and corner help.  I think that could've been better spent.

At least the pick will help them.  Granted they didn't need to move up at all to get him, but that O-line has been pathetic for a while.  First step.

Yes the pick might help them but they could of stayed where they were and taken Branden Albert who most people had going in the top 12, or after they traded down they could of taken Jeff Otah or Rashard Mendenhall, Two highly rated guys.

Good points.  We'll see how Cherlius pans out.

Love the Chiefs and Steelers draft.  Those two teams improved a ton in my opinion.

Don't know what to think of my team's draft.  Jordy Nelson is a horrible pick, that much I know.  Brohm is interesting for a whole lot of reasons.  To get a talent like him  at 56 is ridiculous but at the same time QB wasn't a need.  Patrick Lee fills a need, but I'm not sure if he'll ever be anything more than a nickleback.

The Steelers draft was impressive for me.  As a huge Brian Brohm fan, I'm glad to see him go to a good team that can only get better as time goes by.  I'm wondering how quickly he'll see playing time, and I'm just going to leave it at that for now.

I'm a pretty big Brohm fan too, so I expect big things from him.  I could see Brohm playing in week 1 or sitting on the bench all year and neither would surprise me.  Its going to be weird actually having a QB battle for once.

Just one more thought : If the Bears drafted Brian Brohm, they'd have the best draft thus far in my opinion.  That said, not a bad first day, just could've been a bit better.

Gosder Cherilus....really, Millen?  A guy that got handled twice by Chris Ellis of VT that wasn't even a first day guy?  And trading up for him too...wow.

Detroit will never be good until Millen is gone.

First of all.....growing up a Blue Hen fan, I hope Flacco gets it done for Baltimore (even though I'm not a Ravens fan)

More importantly......CF, you're still rollin' in the basement?  What's up with that?!?!?    Come on down to SC.  I'll put you up in the guest room.  It will be just like the basement, only there are windows.  Plus, you'll get SEC football in the fall.

You will have to let the dogs out occasionally, though.

I could see both happening as well.  But it's his rookie year, so sitting on the bench may not be a bad thing depending on what's happening behind the scenes.

I am pretty happy the draft is over. All of the commercials and shows about it were getting to be overkill. Now for the next couple of weeks we need to listen to how crummy teams, that had the first picks, are now going to be playoff teams. I really don't see that happening. The Dolphins, Jets, Raiders, Falcons......none of them will come close to .500. I think most of the teams addressed their needs and will get better, however not too many rookies come into the league and change a team right away and it is unfair to think that they could. So I guess we will have to hear about the "playoff" match up between the Dolphins and the Chiefs because they had a "good" draft.

I totally agree with you Renegade, three years sounds realistic for those teams. That is assuming these players get what they want and aren't flops.
