There were a record ... trades in this draft, the best of which was Trey Wingo taking over for Chris Berman in ESPN's drivers seat. Much improved. Plenty of selections to digest over the next few days, but here are some notable picks Sunday afternoon and a few thoughts.
3rd (64) - Detroit - Kevin Smith, UCF
I don't know that he's fast enough to be anything more than a 2nd, 3rd string back int he NFL. If Detroit thought they needed running back help, and they do, Rashard Mendenhall was there for them at 17. They could have addressed offensive line with their 2nd and 3rd overall picks. It's Millen, what should we expect.
3rd (71) - Baltimore - Tavares Gooden, Miami (FL)
7th Floor Crew in the house! As if the Ravens needed any more players from Da U. Good player, though, and Ray Lewis' "guidance" will help him eventually find a role in the Baltimore defense.
3rd (74) - Carolina - Dan Connor, Penn State
Here's an example of a player who was a stud in college, and then just because he's a little slower falls all the way to the 3rd round. Arguably the best college linebacker is a steal here at 74. He'll be around for a long time, and when this draft is evaluated in five years I would guarantee he's one of the 20 best players.
3rd (94) - New England - QB Kevin O'Connell, San Diego State
QB controversy! OK, not any time soon, but I held the belief that this was the 4th best QB prospect in the draft. By chance of a miracle, I had hoped he'd land in the Bears hands, but to no avail. He'll start in this league eventually.
3rd (95) - New York G - WR Mario Manningham, Michigan
I'm sure he'll stay out of trouble in NYC. Considering he was a first round talent during the college football season, this is the type of risk worth taking. Having fellow U of M grade (although it's doubt Manningham will graduate) Amani Toomer as a mentor should help his progress and adjustment to having the money to buy some really good weed.
4th (103) - Tennessee - DE William Hayes, Winston Salem State
Continuing in a string of awful draft choices, the Titans selected someone that wasn't even in the NFL's database as a possible selection. Mel Kiper has something on him, of course. He could end up a Hall of Famer and it's still an awful choice in the 4th round. Note to whoever is in charge .... YOUR QB NEEDS WIDE RECEIVERS and OFFENSIVE LINEMAN.
5th (137) - Minnesota - QB John David Booty, USC
Is it possible for a team to have their starting QB in the 5th round? Jackson is still the man for the Vikings, but great value pick here in the 5th round. I bet he's the first QB, outside of Ryan, to see some playing time.
5th (156) - Pittsburgh - QB Dennis Dixon, Oregon
Interesting choice. Charlie Batch is hardly a long term backup, and Dixon will never be a starting QB in the NFL, but he certainly adds an interesting change of pace option and could give Pittsburgh some creativity on offense. Anyone think he'll try as a WR?
6th (168) - Washington - P Durant Brooks, Georgia Tech
Hooray! First punter off the board. Everyone loves a good solid punter (right 100%).
6th (177) - Cincinnati - LB/S Corey Lynch, Appalachian State
I think you know who this guy is. No surprise it's an Ohio fan base who loves them some Appy State field goal blockers.
6th (186) - Washington - QB Colt Brennan, Hawaii
That was nice of Jim Zorn. He's not going to be an NFL QB, but hey, he'll be a good practice arm/dummy.
6th (198) - New York G - QB Andre' Woodson, Kentucky
To think he was a potential Top 10 pick last fall. Great arm, just a slow release. Certainly a better option for New York than Jared Lorenzen as a backup.
7th (218) - Detroit - S Caleb Campbell, Army
Finally, the Lions give us a reason to be proud. Caleb dodges a trip abroad, and as punishment, is forced to play with the Lions.
7th (227) - Denver - Payton Hillis, Arkansas
Outstanding pick. If you judge 7th round picks based on simply making the roster, this deserves an A+, but Payton will make a pro bowl as a H-Back/FB.
