A tradition unlike any other, the Jets screwing up the NFL Draft on ESPN.
There's two guarantees when watching the NFL Draft. Mel Kiper's hair won't move and Jets fans will likely boo several of their picks.
Here's the classic video montage of all the best, and I mean worst, Jets draft moments. Below is a quick rundown of each of the picks, who else they could have reasonably selected, and how the draft pick worked out for the organization.
1980: WR Lam Jones (Texas) picked 2nd overall
Notable Players Selected Over: Anthony Munoz, Hall of Fame OT
Evaluation: 5 year career, 13 touchdown catches, 2,322 yards receiving
1981: RB Freeman McNeil (UCLA) picked 3rd overall
Selected Over: Ronnie Lott. He was OK.
Evaluation: The pick didn't go over well at the time, but he did turn into one of the better running backs in Jets history. Averaged over 4.0 ypc in his 12 year career. That's all relevant, of course. He did make the Pro Bowl once, but hardly lived up to expectations.
1983: QB Ken O'Brien (Cal-Davis) pickced 24th overall
Selected Over: Dan Marino. Ever heard of him?
Evaluation: Solid career. Amassed 25,000 passing yards in 10-year career and made the Pro Bowl twice, however the team didn't have much success with him under center. Marino passed for 61,000+ yards.
1987: FB Roger Vick (Texas A&M) picked 21st overall
Selected Over: Christian Okoye
Evaluation: First of all, they drafted a FB in the first round. That's horrible. Played just three years rushing for 1,289 yards and 10 touchdowns.
1989: DE Jeff Lageman (Virginia) picked 14th overall
Selected Over: Steve Atwater
Evaluation: Spent 6 of his 10 seasons with the Jets, 10 sacks in 1991 was his best year. OK player, certainly nothing special.
1990: RB Blair Thomas (Penn State) picked 2nd overall
Selected Over: Cortez Kennedy, Junior Seau, and Emmitt Smith
Evaluation: Had a solid rookie season, but only rushed for 2,000 yards and 5 touchdowns in four seasons with the Jets. Better known for his fumbles.
1992: WR Johnny Mitchell (Nebraska) picked 15th overall
Selected Over: Wide receivers Carl Pickens and Jimmy Smith
Evaluation: Only played four seasons with the team, catching 16 touchdown passes and 2,000 yards receiving.
1995: TE Kyle Brady (Penn State) picked 9th overall
Selected Over: Warren Sapp
Evaluation: Had four average seasons with the Jets before moving on to the Jaguars where was an above average tight end for most of his career.
Recent years haven't produced total busts, but one would have to question drafting a kicker with your first overall selection as a team in the 2005 draft. D'Brickshaw Ferguson definitely hasn't lived up to his 4th overall status in 2006, but the jury is still out on his young career.
Here's the New York Jets complete draft history.
You'd have to think the Jets can't screw up the 6th overall pick on Saturday, but you just never know.
