NFL Draft Grades - AFC South: Titans Waiting for NFL to Adopt Mandatory Wishbone Offense
4/28/08
Who had the best draft? The most accurate way to grade every team is to say: Incomplete. But that's no fun.
We obviously won't be able to judge for several years, but in terms of addressing needs and getting players of value, here's some of my thoughts on the AFC South, but I'm more interested in yours.
(Just including top 5 picks, but grade based on total draft)
Houston Texans
1 (26) - Duane Brown, OT, Virginia Tech
3 (79) - Antwaun Molden, CB, Eastern Kentucky
3 (89) - Steve Slaton, RB, West Virginia
4 (118) - Xavier Adibi, LB, Virginia Tech
5 (151) - Frank Okam, DT, Texas
That sound you heard after the Texans first pick was a collective who? I'm all for drafting offensive lineman, but even those whose job it is to strictly study this stuff didn't have him as one of the next 3-4 offensive lineman taken. Molden? Whatever it's the third round. Slaton? Probably worth the pick at 89. He's clearly talented, but he's only a situational back and is not your solution at running back. I'd say the best pick was Okam who I've always expected more from. C
Indianapolis Colts
2 (59) - Mike Pollak, OC, Arizona State
3 (93) - Philip Wheeler, LB, Georgia Tech
4 (127) - Jacob Tamme, TE, Kentucky
5 (161) - Marcus Howard, LB, Georgia
6 (196) - Tom Santi, TE, Virginia
Apparently Center was a big need for the Colts because they draft three of them. Bill Polian is one of my favorite in the business and have a hard time questioning any of his selections. Tamme will likely become a pain in the ass to guard and play a similar role to Dallas Clark. Not necessarily there to block, but will create some mismatches with linebackers and safeties. Marcus Howard doesn't know how good he can be. One of the more interesting picks of the draft, Mike Hart going 202nd overall. Small, gets beat up, but always fights for the extra yards. B
Jacksonville Jaguars
1 (8) - Derrick Harvery, DE, Florida
2 (52) - Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn
5 (155) - Thomas Williams, LB, USC
5 (159) - Trae Williams, CB, South Florida
7 (213) - Chauncey Washington, RB, USC
I don't think it's a good sign when your last two picks are considered your best. Williams is good, and Chauncey Washington certainly has NFL talent. Trading up to take Harvey still doesn't make sense to me two days later, but GM James Harris must have had some strong convictions about the defensive end to do so. No pressure at all, Harvey. C-
Tennessee Titans
1 (24) - Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina
2 (54) - Jason Jones, DE, Eastern Michigan
3 (85) - Craig Stevens, TE, California
4 (103) - William Hayes, DE, Winston Salem State
4 (126) - Lavelle Hawkins, WR, California
Few players impressed me more than Johnson during the bowl season. He was breathtakingly fast, but he was also running against a defense that probably had one or two potential pros ... maybe. Drafting Johnson 1st overall was the single dumbest pick in 2008 NFL Draft. That pick's closest competition is the one they made 103rd overall. Williams Hayes may wind up a decent pro. Who knows. What I do know is that he wasn't expected to be drafted and the Titans took him in the 4th round before they addressed their biggest need - WR. D-
