Who had the best draft? The most accurate way to grade every team is to say: Incomplete. But that's no fun.
We obviously won't be able to judge for several years, but in terms of addressing needs and getting players of value, here's some of my thoughts on the AFC South, but I'm more interested in yours.
(Just including top 5 picks, but grade based on total draft)
Denver Broncos
1 (12) - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State
2 (42) - Eddie Royal, WR, Virginia Tech
4 (108) - Kory Lichtensteiger, C, Bowling Green
4 (119) - Jack Williams, CB, Kent
5 (139) - Ryan Torain, RB, Arizona State
Clady is a perfect fit for the Broncos scheme. I'd be surprised if Royal fills a void at wide receiver, but he'll be a dangerous returner. You can probably jot Ryan Torain down for one 1,000 yard season and then disappearing. Best pick, maybe of the draft, Peyton Hillis at 227. He'll be a Chris Cooley-type in a couple short years. B
Kansas City Chiefs
1 (5) - Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
1 (15) - Branden Albert, OT, Virginia
2 (35) - Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech
3 (73) - Jamaal Charles, RB, Texas
3 (76) - Brad Cottam, TE, Tennessee
It's always the teams with the most glaring needs, and weaknesses at nearly every position that gets the best overall. Unanimously, the Chiefs have received A's. I'll be no different. I'll also call them a bit lucky. Glenn Dorsey is the best overall prospect in my opinion and he fell to fifth. Albert, whom KC considered at No. 5 fell to them at 15. Flowers is a great get at No. 35 and Jamaal Charles can be an electrifying 10-carries-a-game back. A
Oakland Raiders
1 (4) - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
4 (100) - Tyvon Branch, CB, Connecticut
4 (125) - Arman Shields, WR, Richmond
6 (169) - Trevor Scott, DE, Buffalo
7 (226) - Chaz Schilens, WR, San Diego State
Good luck, Darren. You'll have to rush for 2,000 yards in year one for this to be considered a great draft. He's explosive, he's fast, but what happens when he's one on one with a fast defensive end in the flat. I'm still doubtful he's tough enough to have an Adrian Peterson impact. B-
San Diego Chargers
1 (27) - Antoine Cason, DB, Arizona
3 (69) - Jacob Hester, FB, LSU
5 (166) - Marcus Thomas, RB, UTEP
6 (192) - DeJuan Tribble, CB, Boston College
7 (234) - Corey Clark, OT, Texas A&M
Nothing flashy, but I suspect the first four will be regular contributors in three years and that's about all you can ask from a draft. B
Who was the best pick in this division? Worst? Your thoughts.
